Atmospheric conditions leading to aerosol clusters stabili- zation, fresh particles formation and particle growth were analyzed. Data of days with no new particle formation confrmed the connection between mixing layer height development and decrease of total aerosol number concentration together with lower gaseous pollutant concentrations. On the contrary, new particle for- mation process overcomes dilution of the atmosphere by increasing the number of freshly nucleated particles. Only decreasing gaseous pollutant concentrations were observed during these events. This study assesses the variability of organic aerosol (OA) sources monitored at the rural background site Frýdlant. Non-refractory PM1 was evaluated in two seasons of\n2021. The positive matrix factorization with the multi-linear engine was used to determine the sources of OA at Frýdlant site, with four factors resolved both in winter and\nsummer.

A Seven-Years Based Characterization of Aerosol Light Scattering Properties at Central European Rural Site: Variability and Source Apportionment

The aim of this study is to focus on the temporal variations of light-scattering properties of aerosols at a rural background site in Central Europe. The total light scattering (σsp) and backscattering (σbsp) coefficients and associated calculated optical properties such as the Ångström exponent (SAE), the backscattering ratio (b), and the asymmetry factor (g), are characterized considering different time scales (annual, seasonal, monthly, or diurnal) based on long-term measurement. The optical properties were compared with meteorological conditions (fog, cloudiness), the concentrations of gaseous pollutants such as NOx and SO2 were inspected as well as potential sources of atmospheric aerosols. In addition, radiative forcing, and the influence of other meteorological conditions (e.g., height of planetary boundary layer), chemical composition and particle size distribution at the National Atmospheric Observatory Košetice (NAOK) are being further investigated to better understand the direct effects of aerosols on the local climate.

Lidar Vertical Profile Analyzes at National Atmospheric Observatory Košetice during Volcano Eruption on La Palma Island.

Volcanic eruptions are one of the most important sources of natural aerosol. Their negative impacts on air quality (the effects of volcanic exhaust) can be observed via long-range transport to locations far from the eruption. One of the most recent events of volcanic activity was a volcanic eruption on La Palma in the fall of 2021 (Cumbre Vieja Volcano, La Palma Island, Canary Islands, 28°36'54 ,N 17°52'07 ,W, 1,949 m a.s.l.). The impact of the volcanic eruption on air quality, which occurred 3600 km from the National Atmospheric Observatory Košetice, was studied using a combination of ground-based measurements and vertical profile analyzes. Since a new instrument (LIDAR) has extended the equipment of our station, vertical profile analyzes were performed.

Five Years of Aerosol Particles Growth Rate Measurements at Four Background Stations in the Czech Republic.

Response of aerosol concentrations to the daily atmospheric boundary layer variability at the national atmospheric observatory Košetice

The atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) is the part of the troposphere directly influenced by the properties of the Earth’s surface. The ABL thickness reaches from hundreds of meters to a few kilometres. The daily cycle of the ABL height is primarily result of interaction between incoming solar radiation and Earth’s surface heat fluxes because a turbulent motion is dominant in this layer. Air pollutants are generally emitted from surface and their measured concentrations are also influenced by dilution of the atmosphere, or ABL thickness. This study is focused on the linkage between the diurnal ABL height evolution and aerosol particle number concentrations.

Black carbon (BC) is recognized to play an important role on adverse public health and in the Earth’s climate system (Bond et al., 2013). It is the most efficient light-absorbing aerosol species in the visible spectrum emitted as primary pollutant from a variety of combustion related sources. Although measurements of Equivalent Black Carbon (EBC) with multiple wavelength aethalometer have been used to provide insights regarding the influence of fossil fuel (traffic emissions) and wood smoke in ambient air (Sandradewi et al., 2008, Vaishya et al. 2017), scarce studies have been reported in Eastern Central Europe using real-time EBC measurements.\nThis study focuses on the seasonal, diurnal and weekly trends of EBC at a regional background site in Central Europe during a 5-year measurement. Our aim is to identify the potential sources of EBC, especially the influence from fossil fuel and biomass burning.
