The presentation brings basic information about the history of audio documents, the current situation in terms of processing and care in the Czech Republic. It introduces the main current projects - the portal Virtual National Phonoteque and the New Phonograph and grant programs usabel for libraries.

Beyond library spaces: the first decade of the National Library of Technology (NTK) in the new building

During the last decade, National Library of Technology (NTK) has become an integral part of the Prague Dejvice campus. The library building, which had almost one million visits in 2019, is very popular, especially among university students, both domestic and international. The library’s inspiring study spaces and facilities, together with its position in the very heart of campus, are a great advantage for fulfilling our mission of supporting students, professors and researchers. However, in order to become a real hub of STEM information and their efficient transfer to the education and research processes, besides the great building and high-quality information sources, a crucial role belongs to user services and the people who provide them. This presentation focuses on the methods used in observing the information needs and habits of NTK’s patrons and students on campus as well as on evaluation of our users’ experiences. These findings are instrumental for continuous and agile space design adaptations and the improvement of service that support academic and professional growth, inquisitiveness, and the competitiveness of our patrons.

Virtual National Phonoteque as the sector agregator of the sound cultural heritage

Národní technická knihovna je od r. 2018 správcem a provozovatelem Virtuální národní fonotéky (VNF). Z pověření Ministerstva kultury pro VNF vyplývá také povinnost plnit funkci sektorového agregátora pro oblast zvukových dokumentů ve vztahu k chystanému národnímu informačnímu kulturnímu portálu. Původním a základním posláním VNF je být agregovanou databází metadat zvukových dokumentů, s odkazy do lokálních portálů a katalogů institucí různého typu a s informacemi o podmínkách dostupnosti požadovaných nahrávek. Usilujeme o to, aby se VNF ubírala i dalšími směry, které by rozvíjely tyto primární funkce tak, aby se Fonotéka stala vstupním bodem pro zájemce o problematiku zvukových dokumentů a přispěla k záchraně a prezentaci národního zvukového kulturního dědictví. Zde se neobejdeme bez spolupráce s dalšími partnery v oblasti zvukových dokumentů.

Project DEAL: plans, challenges, results

DEAL is an initiative of the Alliance of Science Organizations in Germany with the goal to conclude nationwide licensing agreements for the entire portfolio of electronic journals from major academic publishers. The intention is to bring about significant change to the status quo in relation to negotiations, content and pricing in the process and to achieve wide-scale, lasting improvements in open access to scholarly literature. The first agreement with a major publisher was signed on January 15, 2019 – after a long series of negotiations. I am a member of the DEAL negotiation team and will report on the whole range of plans and challenges as well as my expectations for future development.

HathiTrust and collaborative collection services

HathiTrust started in 2008 as a partnership of academic and research institutions with an initial focus on preserving and providing access to digitized book and journal content from member library collections around the world. In the years since this remains a core tenant of what HathiTrust does. By focusing on numerous collaborative collection services, HathiTrust is able to contribute to the world’s research, scholarship, and the common good. This talk will include an overview of the history and mission of HathiTrust with a focus on how our collaborative collection services are key to achieving everything we do.
