Damnatio memoriae - World War II Monuments in Croatia
Dukić, Predrag ; Abu Ghosh, Yasar (advisor) ; Novotná, Hedvika (referee)
In my work, I focus on the removal and demolition of monuments by partisans and the fight against fascism during the Second World War. This phenomenon has been occurring in Croatia in various waves with changing intensity since the 1990s. My work is based on repeated visits and field research that I conducted in Croatia. The empirical part of the work consists of narrative episodic interviews and unobtrusive observation of commemorative ceremonies. I examined how narrators explain their attitudes towards monuments as symbols of a particular societal view of the past. In my work, I drew from Maurice Halbwachs's theory of the social origins of memory and other theoretical concepts related to his work. I was interested in the mechanisms of creating, maintaining, and transferring social memory from generation to generation. I show the existence of multiple perspectives in viewing the past and examine the impact of this multiplicity of perspectives on relationships in Croatian society. Keywords: collective memory, commemoration, identity, memory sites, monuments, remembering, social justice.
