The issue of gentrification in selected parts of Prague and Berlin
Moravová, Darja ; Kunštát, Miroslav (advisor) ; Zelená, Alena (referee)
This thesis, a comparative case study, deals with the issue of gentrification in selected parts of Prague and Berlin, the selected parts being Holešovice in Prague and Friedrichshain- Kreuzberg in Berlin. Gentrification is the process of replacing the original population with a more affluent population, and it involves things like physical transformation of a neighborhood, rent increases, or changes in the shops and services offered in a neighborhood. The aim of the thesis was to provide a comparison of the gentrification process in Holešovice and Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg based on three basic factors: the development and structure of the population, changes in shops and services in the district, and physical transformation. Furthermore, the reactions of residents and politicians to changes in neighborhoods were also investigated. From the comparison, it became clear that the gentrification process in Holešovice and Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg is carried out in a similar way, but that in Berlin residents and politicians are much more active in terms of interest in their neighborhood. Keywords Gentrification, urban transformation, redevelopment, housing crisis
