Critical Analysis of the Contemporary Views on Nuclear Deterrence in South Asia
Hruška, Adam ; Karmazin, Aleš (advisor) ; Smetana, Michal (referee)
This bachelor thesis deals with the influence of nuclear weapons on the relation between India and Pakistan in the context of the Kargil War. Specifically, the thesis is written in form of case study dedicated to finding the best applicable theoretical concept to explain the absence of use of nuclear weapons in conflict, combined with testing the concept of nuclear taboo. The Kargil war itself offers a specific case of open conflict between two states possessing a nuclear arsenal showing the issue of theoretical concepts built on the relationship between the United States and the Soviet Union during the Cold War. Thesis will deal with both the historical context of the conflict, i.e. from the nuclear tests of 1998 to the stabilization of the situation around 2003, as well as own strategic conceptions of the two participating states, which will be used as empirical data in comparison with the ideals of individual theoretical concepts. In conclusion, the thesis uses the acquired knowledge to clarify the applicability of individual concepts on conflict and the functioning of nuclear taboo in practice.
