Indians in the life and work of Gabriela Mistral

The American Indians in Gabriela Mistral's life and work The Chilean writer Gabriela Mistral, with legal name Lucila de María del Perpetuo Socorro Godoy Alcayaga (April 7, 1889, Vicuña, Chile - January 10, 1957, New York, USA) considered herself as a mestizo. Her father had indigenous ancestors from the tribe of Diaguitas and her mother had Basque ancestors. The American Indians, pre-Columbian inhabitants of Americas, were one of the topics she was interested in. Her interest in the American Indians, their ancient culture and their actual position in the society, is reflected in her literary creation. In her poetry and in her prose appear the motives related with the pre- Columbian civilizations and also the topic of the agrarian reform. Acording to Mistral, everybody has the right to own his part of the land and also to the education.
