The space of the city: Turnov at the time and the space

The subject matter of the thesis is defined as a cultural analysis of urban planning in a specific, lesser-size town - the town of Turnov. In its first part, the text focuses on the historical circumstances of the town2s origins. It concentrates on the most important periods from the point of view of the present day layout of the town2s centre: the early Middle Ages - a period of town building; the late Renaissance period and the emerging Baroque era; the 19th century; and finally, the text recapitulates 20th century developments. The text analyses the natural and geographic conditions at a location where a new town was being formed; it follows the specific process of settlement centralization, transformation in building technologies and onset of masonry buildings, the impact of repeated disastrous fires on the town square2s appearance, not leaving out the social and political context. We briefly introduce the present day layout of the town2s centre. The following section continues on with a specific demonstration of a clearly defined - and throughout time, a remarkably stable - three-dimensional spatial structure of the town2s centre.
