Transgenerational transmission of romani musical knowledge and skills in Klenovec and Kokava

This thesis analyses transgenerational transmission of musical knowledge and skills, (i.e. methods of musical teaching and learning) in the community of Romani musicians in Klenovec and Kokava in Central Slovakia. The thesis questions widespread myth about innate musicality of Roma and suggests an alternative explanation for postulated musical excellence of Roma through differences in their musical education. In the first part of the thesis, the question of musical-talent heritability both in social and natural science is being discussed. It concludes that despite of long discussions and recent hints in the field of genetic, we cannot consider an inborn genetic component for Romani musicality. In the second part, theoretical differences in music-educational systems are discussed (Merriam, Van den Bos, Turino) and the majority's institutionalised system of musical education of the Czech Republic and Slovakia is presented. The third part is a comparison of the institutionalised system with traditional methods of musical learning and teaching inside musicians' community in Klenovec and Kokava. The Use of Gypsy Songs in Music Classes

Romani music and its incorporation into the school education is the theme of this thesis. The aim is to provide fundamental information about Romani culture and music and to inspire teachers to include multicultural and ethnic topics into their lessons. The thesis is divided into two parts. The theoretical part (first and second chapter) deals with Romani people and their value system, language and its pronunciation. It describes the main characteristics of traditional and contemporary Romani music, while a separate subchapter focuses on Czech songs about Romani people. The following practical part (third and fourth chapter) describes the use of Romani music for both, Romani and non-Romani, children. First, the projects Čhavorenge a Čhavorikano luma are presented, the aim of which is to remind Romani children of their traditional music and the values of their culture. The way of teaching Romani music at a selected elementary school with a large percentage of Romani students is also mentioned. The fourth chapter introduces the possibilities of using Romani music for non-Romani children. It includes songbooks, song collections and arrangements for children and student choirs. Ida Kelarová - life and contribution to the musical culture of the gipsy

The thesis describes the life of Ida Kelarova and captures part of her lifelong activity. It is not possible to show all of the important things that mrs. Kelarova hase done, so I will focus on those that I witnessed personally or those that I was part of. It is great honour to weite my work about mrs. Kelarova especially because I had the opportunity to work directly with her. Majority of this paper comes from personal discussions and experiences.
Contemporary gipsy Music in Czech Republic

The thesis descirbes contemporary professional gipsy music at the highest level as well as amateur gipsy music, which is played only with love and truth. Main sources for this thesis is my own experiences. The contemporary gipsy music is a very complicated and complex topic, that´s why I am going to concentrate only on gipsy music in the Czech republic.
