Linguistic expression of sound in bird names motivated by their vocalization
GAŽÁK, Lukáš
This thesis aims to describe and clarify the way sound is expressed in language. This is achieved by analysis of bird names motivated by their vocalization. The thesis is conceived from the onomasiological point of view where the starting point of the analysis is the referent to be named. In the theoretical part of the thesis, onomasiology and Lakoff's Idealised Cognitive Model are described. Analysis of the bird names is carried out in within the particular ways in which sound is coded in language. The resulting data are quantified and interpreted.
Expressing Colour in Language
MARKYTÁNOVÁ, Tereza
This thesis aims to examine the relation between language and colour. Namely, it focuses on expressing the perception of colour as a salient feature in the process of naming mushrooms. The work is based on onomasiological approach that proceeds in its examination of the naming process from the concept itself. The colour referring terms were sorted into concrete categories of type of designation based on the way they express colour (e.g. by directly using colour terms, metaphorical expressions). The names of mushrooms were analysed and contrasted in English and Czech language.
The motivation for the use of metaphor in bird names
MELSKI, Dominik
This thesis aims to explore the possible reasons that motivate speakers to use metaphors in the naming units of natural organisms. The work deals with various approaches to the concept of metaphor, especially the concept of image metaphors defined by Lakoff (1992). This is followed by the description of onomasiology and onomasiological word formation models applied in the analysis. For the work, a corpus of metaphorical bird names was created. The names were sorted by the types of salient features that the metaphors express. The subsequent analysis takes place within these categories. In evaluating the motivation for the use of metaphor in the naming units, I adopted the classification suggested in Kos (2019), which I supplement with the newly observed trends. The resulting data are quantified and interpreted.
