Folk motifs in Bolesław Leśmians poetry
Jilečková, Alžběta ; Benešová, Michala (advisor) ; Kolmanová, Simona (referee)
Bolesław Leśmian is a polish writer active especially at the beginning of the 20th century. His work is hard to be classified and it does not perfectly fit into any particular literature movement. The main theme of this essay is the confrontation of his poetry with folk motives and folkiness in general, due to the fact that it is one of the biggest source of his inspiration. Lésmian often refers to the original and pure human experiences, found in nature and out of his contemporary world. Inspiration from legends, ballads and fairy tales is apparent throughout his work, including his usage of symbols, motives and characters. His language is also apparently inspired by these sources. In my essay, I focus on the analysis of typical characters and symbols that are taken from the folk literature. Moreover, I also focus on author's specific poetics of death and metamorphosis. The final chapter present several specific examples of author's inspiration by folk literature.

Funeral ceremony in the second half of the 20th century
Šafránková Šídová, Erika ; Vaněk, Miroslav (advisor) ; Urbášek, Pavel (referee)
Death is an ever-present fact in human life and it affects its life course. Stable form of funeral ritual is developed from the need for reconciliation with one's own mortality and loss of loved ones. Traditional funeral ceremony based on combination of lore and Christian ritual had changed due to changes in political and social life during the 20th century. Probably the biggest effect had the administration of communist party which lasted for 40 years and which used funeral ceremony as propaganda of its regime. The struggle with traditional Christian funeral was connected with an open fight with church as such and was caused by communist effort to dominate social life. Instead of traditional Christian funeral communism proclaimed cremation as an anticlerical burial option. Effects of communism then developed new funeral rituals. This text is motivated by the effort to identify perception of death and its changes in Czech republic in the second half of the 20th century, using literary and oral sources. It searches for an answer to the question of whether communist regime changed funeral ritual and tries to identify it in taped oral sources.
Symbols of exclusion from society in folk tradition
JUŘICOVÁ, Iveta
The dissertation titled Symbols of exclusion from society in folk tradition concentrates on the interaction of symbols and folk tradition. It explores the way the phenomenon of love and death is traditionally viewed in the Czech country, namely during the Middle Ages and modern times. The main focus of this dissertation is on the social roles of women, although it also shows proof of social exclusion of a man as an executioner. To demonstrate the reasons behind excluding individuals on the outskirts of society, the author also gives short characteristics of the views on the issue of chastity, traditional expectations of fulfilling the female social roles - as virgins, wives and mothers. The author then gives examples of behavior which, in folk tradition, were looked upon as impure/virtueless.
