Influence of foreign private actors on political decision-making in the Czech Republic: case study of Japanese and German economic actors

Influence of non-state transnational actors on decision-making of sovereign states is one of the most important topics in the international relations discipline. Some academic approaches consider this influence as quite important. Others perceive it as only secondary. Economic actors are a specific case because they on one hand bring know-how, employment and economic growth. On the other hand, they decrease sovereignty of the host states. This thesis tries to uncover influence of the two strongest non-state transnational economic actors in the Czech Republic - German and Japanese Chambers of Commerce. The topic of lobbying of these actors in the case of lack of labor force in the Czech Republic was chosen because of its good empirics. The text also aims to test assumptions according to which bargaining power of such actors is influenced by geographical distance between the host state and home country of the transnational actor. This thesis also wants to address the general topic of influence of the transnational actors on states in the international relations, based on the findings of this case study.

Thesis abstract: Geopolitical Rivalry in Central Asia and Turkmenistan's power as a weak state Charles University, Institute of International Studies, MAS programme 2019 Emma Welsink English Abstract Research on weak states and their position in the international system has been a widely discussed topic for decades, especially in relation to the Cold War bipolar system that revolved around Russia and the United States as great powers. Yet what is lacking is a contemporary analysis that concentrates on the current multipolar system in which the importance of economic alliances and power surpass military power, and how this affects weak states' foreign policy behavior and trade opportunities. This research therefore offers an empirical analysis on great power geopolitical competition between Russia and China over Turkmenistan's economic allegiance, specifically regarding its natural gas export, and seeks to explain how this geopolitical competition has affected Turkmenistan's foreign energy policy behavior as a weak state vis-á-vis these great powers. The Politics of Developing Countries in the WTO

This thesis aims to analyze the position and influence of developing countries in the WTO. The key points of analysis are the participation of developing countries throughout the history of the GATT/WTO, an assessment of their activity and participation in the WTO bodies and decision-making process, an examination of their bagaining power, suggesting that the position of developing countries may improve through the formation of coalitions. Through a study and analysis of the current round of trade negotiations and its roadblocks, this paper assesses the current position and influence of developing countries in the WTO with an emphasis on the recurring deadlocks of the round. The main phenomena of the current round are an increase in coalition activity and the emergence of a new group of dominant players, namely India, China and Brazil. Owing to these new trends, developing countries in the WTO have been able to vigorously promote their interests. However, these interests clash with those of the developed world, which results in a stalemate of the negotiations.

An analysis of the municipal elections results

In 2010 the municipal elections took place in the Czech Republic. In this theses there are applied some of the knowledge from the area of the public choice theory and the game theory to the results of the pre-election surveys and results of the elections. Firstly the methods for allocating seats are applied on data from the surveys and election results. The power indices are calculated for all the proportion of allocation of mandates in order to qualify the bargaining power. The results of elections are analysed and compared with two previous periods and with the pre-election surveys. The bargaining power is confronted according to the indices with the results of post-elections negotiations.
