Piracy in the Horn of Africa Region

The diploma thesis is a case study, which focuses on the identification of the key aspects influencing the presence of maritime piracy in the Horn of Africa region and the birth of Somali piracy. In accordance with the research questions, the thesis analyses the main factors that are influencing the birth of maritime piracy and the piracy itself the most. In the historical context, the thesis focuses on the causes for the piracy in the Horn of Africa region, as well as on the similarities between the historical and modern maritime piracy. The thesis also contains a detailed description of all measures taken against the Somali pirates. Based on the evaluation of the engagement of different international actors in the fight against the Somali pirates, the thesis analyses their role in association with the suppression of maritime piracy in the Horn of Africa region, including the legal enforceability, both in the historical context, and the international law, more precisely the national law, possibly international agreements. The analysis conducted in the boundaries of a case study has undoubtedly proven the advantage of an international cooperation while dealing with global issues, even if there are, seemingly insuperable, structural limitations. Piracy as a threat to the international security: NATO in the Gulf of Aden

This bacherol's thesis deals with a modern and specific threat to security relations -- piracy. It characterizes this threat in the case of the Gulf of Aden, where the Somali pirate networks operated, which triggered an international reaction and intervention. In connection with the threat of piracy, the thesis analyzes in the theoretical part the history and evolution of piracy into its current form, where it focuses on the emergence of piracy in the Gulf of Aden and the roots of the problems in this area. The second chapter focuses on the various organizations that operate in the Gulf of Aden. These are divided into military and non-military organizations. The last part is devoted to the North Atlantic Alliance, which operates in the Gulf of Aden since 2008.
The Impacts of Maritime Piracy on International Trade

The diploma thesis analyzes the impacts of maritime piracy on international community. The study analyzes the situation in terms of economic impacts, but also in terms of international cooperation in solving piracy issues. The aim of the diploma thesis is to define most vulnerable locations, quantify economic impacts and evaluate the impacts of military missions in the affected regions, as well as analyze the published recommendations.
