Representation of Mexico in short stories El llano en llamas
Chovanová, Hana ; Poláková, Dora (advisor) ; Housková, Anna (referee)
This master's thesis deals with El llano en llamas, a short story collection by Mexican writer Juan Rulfo. The collection depicts the fate of people trying to survive on an inhospitable Mexican plain in the times of the Mexican Revolution. Rulfo not only enables us to visualize the life on the plain by means of these characters, but he also offers us a very realistic portrayal of the country in which the short stories take place. The aim of the thesis is therefore an analysis of the short stories, focusing on the author's depiction of life in this bleak place. We can observe the picture of Mexico through the characters placed onto the plain by the author, as well as through his descriptions of the country surrounding the protagonists of the short stories.
