MoO3/Al2O3 catalysts with sharp and deep eggshell radial profiles of MoO3 concentration were prepared by the reaction of Al2O3 extrudates with MoO3/Al2O3 slurry. The method can be named as solvent assisted spreading. The profiles were visualized by two methods: electron probe microanalysis and sulfidation of samples.

A new method of CoO deposition, solvent assisted spreading, has been studied. Co3O4, Co(OH)2, CoCO3Co(OH)2, and CoCO3 were allowed to react with MoO3/Al2O3 catalysts containing saturated MoO3 monolayer in water slurries. CoO deposition was followed by EPMA. The materials selected were characterized by PZC, SBET, XRD, AAS and HDS of thiophene.

The purpose of the present work was to explore the application of solvent assisted spreading to alpha-boehmite instead to gama-Al2O3. It was expected that MoO3 might serve only as deposited active phase but simultaneously also as peptizing agent improving mechanical strength and as thermal stabilizer inhibiting sintering of support surface area during calcination.
