INTERPRETATION ASPECTS OF CHOPIN’S B MINOR SONATA

The main aim of the thesis is to give a conclusive view of the current interpretation state of Frédéric Chopin’s sonata in B minor, op. 58. A brief formal analysis is provided as well as further study hints. The main part focuses on interpretation difficulties such as edition choice, composition style in contrast to interpretation approaches and fulfilment of the opus by famous pianists.

F. Chopin - Scherzi and the great pianists

This thesis is divided into 2 parts. In the first one I will marginally describe Chopin's life, although many pages about his life have been written - thus I will concentrate on basic biographical facts with an emphasis on the period in which those particular Scherzi were written. I will also describe scherzo as a musical form, its origin and structure. The last subchapter of the first part reveals scherzi in other pieces (sonatas etc.). The second part concentrates on interpretation, I will also analyze several recordings of famous pianists with their personal profiles included.

Francis Poulenc - Piano work

My bachelor’s thesis titled "Francis Poulenc - piano work" is divided into
three main chapters. The first chapter focuses on the composer's life in the
contemporary context. The project also covers mention artistic tendencies in
France during the 20th century and the associated art group Les Six . The second
chapter briefly describes Poulenc's piano language, its expressive and technical
resources. I deal mainly with individual works, their history, complements the
Czech translation of French titles at the complex. For some enclose a
recommendation for the degree of maturity of the piano are determined. In the
third chapter, I mention a chronological overview of solo, chamber and orchestral
piano works . Using this job, I would like to draw attention to the piano works of
Francis Poulenc , which is not broached in concert programs on Czech stages.

THE HISTORY OF THE CZECH JAZZ PIANO

The bachelor thesis illustrates the oldest period of jazz in Bohemia with a detailled description of work, life and recordings of the Czech jazz piano players until 1968. The whole period is divided into five parts describing situation in music generally, mentioning important bands and performers, and finally confronts Czech piano players with world jazz music. Everything is documented with analysis of recordings and different piano styles.

Miloslav Kabeláč - Complete Works for Piano and Chamber Music for Strings and Piano

The purpose of this dissertation is to analyse Miloslav Kabeláč's piano works. It collects informations and answers questions relating to this narrow focus. The dissertation also tries to find interpretative clues to his two most important piano cycles - Seven pieces op. 14 and Eight preludes op. 30. The dissertation points out the fact that if we want to present and understand his works correctly, it is necessary to study Kabeláč within a broader context.

Piano Work of Viktor Kalabis

Viktor Kalabis (1923 - 2006) is one of the most significant Czech composers of 20th century. His piano works extent is exceptional among output of his contemporaries (two piano concertos with orchestra, three piano sonatas and six other compositions for piano solo). Most of his works are recorded and published.
This dissertation concerns the personality of Viktor Kalabis, a characterization of his musical language and his approach to piano as a tool to express music. This instrument was closest to him and he often devoted to piano the most inner feelings. My aim was to explore his work from interpreter's point of view, the evolution of composer's musical language, the use of instrument's potential as well as new approaches and creation methods. I intended to engage the interest of pianist to V. Kalabis and remarkable qualities of his piano works. I have performed his music at important events (festival, Czech Philharmonic Orchestra concert season) and a concert dedicated to composer's anniversary was recorded by Czech Radio to be later released on CD.
I used the musical analysis as the basic method. I observed the form, harmony, rhythm, usage of instrument's sound, timbre; in concertos also the role of the piano and of the orchestra.
Kalabis wasn't a trendsetter of the avant-garde and he didn't adopt dodecaphonic technique, however he studied it and implemented some dodecaphonic principles. For some period he worked in neoclassicism and shortly neofolklorism styles. He built on traditional harmony, which he enriched with seconds and sevenths proceeding to bitonality and partially also to atonality. He uses both traditional and free forms. Innovation can be found above all in original sound, in creative grouping of instruments and in dramaturgical content of the piece. He laid stress on composition's revealability and listener-friendly character, without being pandering. He created original "non-romantic synthesis" musical language.

F. Chopin: Sonata No. 3 op. 58 h-moll

The topic of this bachelor thesis is piano Sonata No. 3 in b-minor op. 58 by the Polish composer Fryderyk Chopin. This thesis is divided into three chapters in which I examine what is important for the interpretation of the Sonata. I deal with the question what Chopin intended to express, what his intention was, and based on Chopin´s statements "tone idea" that Chopin requested.Chapter 1 deals with Chopin´s biography and Chopin as a composer, pianist and teacher. Chapter 2 is about the methodics that Chopin himself created and that seems to be essential when interpreting this Sonata. In Chapter 3 I compare three different editions of the Sonata and based on findings from previous chapters I ponder how it is best to perform this Sonata.

Piano works of S. Rachmaninov with focusing on the cycle Moments musical

This Diploma´s thesis is focused on a composer Sergej Vasiljevic Rachmaninov. It contains his biography and the list of his piano works. The main part of the work is focused on the piano cycle Moments musical, which consists of six compositions. The thesis includes a formal analysis and recommendation how to play and practice this work.
The final part of the thesis is devoted to the recordings of this cycle. It contains the list of the recordings and the comparison of the three representative pianists. There is also a piece of information about all of them.

Main Repertoire for the trio Clarinet, Cello and Piano

My diploma thesis is called Main repertoire for the trio clarinet, cello and piano. The work is devided to three chapters. The first one is called History and present of the trio clarinet, cello and piano. In this chapter are three independent subchapters. The first is about historical development of these instruments. In the seconde is written something about repertoire options for this group and the third one is about tree well-known groups.
The seconde chapter is about the main tema and there is written about the most played and well-known compositions for this ensemble. There is usually written something short about life of the composer and then formal analysis of every piece. The main compositions are written in this order: Archduke of Austria and The Trio for clarinet, cello and piano, Johannes Brahms and The trio a minor op. 114, Max Bruch and Eight pieces op. 83, Vincent d´Indy and The trio B flat major op. 29, Anton Eberl and Grand trio op. 36, Michail Ivanovič Glinka and The trio Pathétique, Emil Hartmann and Serenada op. 24, Adalbert Gyrowetz and The Trio op. 38, Robert Kahn and Serenada op. 73 a Alexandr Zemlinsky and The trio d minor op. 3.
The last chapter is only about The trio B flat major of Ludwig van Beethoven. In three short subchapters is written something about his life, formal analysis and creation of the composition and analysis of interpretation of two records.
