"Every man's work, whether it be literature, or music or pictures or architecture or anything else, is always a portrait of himself." (Butler) The aim of this thesis is to put forward the importance of the author behind the book and to see clearly the effect of an author's life upon his work. The theme in focus is loneliness. This theme is to be analyzed in a dual manner. Firstly as an account of Steinbeck's own experience of loneliness. Where applicable, a correlation between the author's own experience of loneliness and the struggle of his characters is to be highlighted. This thesis is separated into five parts. The initial part is a brief definition of loneliness which serves the purpose of introducing the theme of study. It also states the terms that will be used throughout the thesis. The second part is an analysis of Steinbeck's own experience of loneliness as obtained through a compilation of his letters. Krupková, Tereza ; Housková, Anna (advisor) ; Vydrová, Hedvika (referee)
Anxiety and estrangement in Juan Carlos Onetti's works Key words: Onetti, The Well, novel, Eladio Linacero, estrangement, anxiety, loneliness, dreams, Tizón This work focuses on the literary conception of characters in Onetti's works. Specifically, it converges on anxiety, loneliness and estrangement, which are the central components of the author's prose. Onetti's first-fruit, The Well, serves as a starting point. This novel revealed new possible ways of the novel-writing and influenced many other authors. It carries the key issues of Onetti's future work. The novel is sketchy; the images often do not follow each other and they are directed by hidden associations. There appears a new character: urban anti-hero, who escapes from the hostile reality to the fantasy life. The present work features the protagonist of The Well with other Onetti's characters. The part dedicated to the style focuses on the relation between form and content. Onetti's books are about misunderstanding which is reflected in the structure and language. In the final chapter of this work is confronted The Well with The Beauty of the World by Héctor Tizón. Different and in some components similar processes allow to recognize and define Onetti's style and uniqueness better.

The Loneliness as a Phenomenon of the Old Age.
ONDRÁČKOVÁ, Miroslava
The main aim of this work is to map the level of loneliness of seniors in an early old age between 65 75 years. It is also important to find out whether seniors feel lonely and if so, what are the reasons of loneliness, how is the loneliness influenced by the physical and psychological health, family, friends, hobbies and the overall attitude to life. I divided the work to research and empirical chapters. The research chapter has two sections. The first section is aimed at different views of an old age. Positive psychology with personality strengths is also mentioned in this section. Recent studies about loneliness are summed up in the second section. The qualitative research of loneliness is described in the empirical chapter. Seven participants living alone in an apartment or a house took part in this research. The method of snowball sampling was used to get the participants who were interviewed using a semi-structured dialogue. During the research interview I used the interrogation method with prepared questions and then asked additional questions in case of doubt. A personality strengths questionnaire was a part of the interview. The whole interview was recorded and subsequently rewritten into this work. The personality strengths questionnaire was used to compare the results of the qualitative research with the strengths of questioned seniors. The results of my work showed that the loneliness as a phenomenon of an old age truly exists. The research also showed that more than 50% of questioned seniors feel lonely in an early old age. This may lead to a conclusion that the loneliness is an important problem. Since the feelings of loneliness are eliminated by an abundance of social contacts and hobbies, we should consider creating an environment which would help the seniors better manage the feelings of loneliness. Moreover, the personality strengths like sense for curiosity and interest in the world, optimism with future orientation, vitality and enthusiasm are the strengths of the interviewed seniors, who never feel lonely or on rare occasions. Therefore, it would be beneficial to strengthen personality strengths of seniors and educate them to be more active in order to maintain vitality and optimism until the late old age. I see the solution of the problem of loneliness mainly in prevention. It is important to prepare for the retirement as early as in the productive age in order to have enough social contacts and a broad spectrum of hobbies.
Poverty and solitude ratio among generation 65+
NEJEDLÁ, Kateřina
The thesis deals with the life of people over sixty-five years, with special focus on financial security and loneliness. The theoretical part of the thesis describes the problems of aging and aging-related changes. Following chapters are devoted to the issues of poverty, gender inequalities in old age and social exclusion. Furthermore, according to the available scientific literature, i describe the themes of loneliness, the impact of loneliness on health and the importance of interpersonal relationships on the issue of loneliness. The thesis aims to better understand the impact of life events and life circumstances on poverty and loneliness in the lives of respondents, and how were these aspects perceived and experienced in the past. Also how do they perceive their current situation, especially in the area of the financial safety and loneliness. There was random selection of five respondents for the research with special objectives in mind equal participation both men and women and living alone after divorce or widowhood and marriage / partnership. These respondents retold their life stories with the help of extensive narrative interviews, which I later transcribed in detail and carefully read through, not to omit important milestones in their lives, which helped me to accomplish the aim of the thesis. For the practical part of the thesis I have chosen the strategy of qualitative research using narrative interviews. Narrative mode is based on a unique and compelling life story presentation with an emphasis on life experience. This technique is suitable for the older generation, which was also confirmed during the research. Two main questions were established for the research. 1.Did the experienced life events and life circumstances influence poverty and loneliness in their current lives? 2. How they perceived and experienced the poverty and loneliness during their lifetime? To answer these questions, it was necessary to keep the conversation arend relevant topics. The research resulted in the following conclusions. Surprisingly, respondents feel no poverty, although the level of their pension is often very near poverty area. Poverty is percieved as the situation of nothing to eat, nowhere to live and no means of subsistence. The explanation lies in the fact that all respondents lived in a time and place where you had to make do with less, and it is the source of their modesty and unpretentiousness. All respondents agree that the transition to retirement was an important milestone in their lives. Altough current pensions doesn't provide for that much activities they were accustomed to, they don't perceive their situation as feeling poor. You can say, that a modest life prepare respondents for life in retirement. In a similar way, respondents expressed the theme of loneliness. In all the interviews family was dominating factor. Respondents living in villages and small sized towns declare to maintain good neighbor relationships, often lasting from the time of childhood. Loneliness is most often associated with the loss of a partner. In the stories of two female respondents, there was loneliness occurance after the death of a partner. This period is stated as the worst in their life and they felt most alone then. Currently the loneliness is compensated by their children and grandchildren.

MARIÁNKOVÁ, Alena
At present we are witnessing a revolutionary period marked by changes in population demographics. Recently there has been a significant increase in life expectancy of people in developed countries and the percentage of seniors in society has been rising. The issue of a proactive approach to aging is therefore very relevant today. It is difficult to determine when youth ends and old age starts, but the World Health Organization has determined this age limit as 60 years. This is the time when people retire and when they perceive their own aging most intensely. The aim of the thesis is to explore the lifestyle of seniors. The theoretical part includes a description of this particular period of human life, the practical research studies the lives of concrete seniors with the aim of creating a clear conception of how today's seniors live, what their normal days look like, what they are occupied with and what they are worried about. The main research groups are couples, but in the research are included also individuals, mostly widows who live alone. Interviews conducted in their home environment enable looking into their privacy, and finding out what the lifestyle of people over 60 years old is like. For all respondents, retirement was a major turning point in their lives. The way they coped with this situation is different in each case, but anyway their lives and lifestyles changed in some way, either positively or negatively. Some people slowed down the pace of life and began to pursue hobbies and family life after leaving their jobs, others used the newly gained time to start to fully focus on their hobbies. There are, however, people who gave up their hobbies and got indolent. This applies particularly to lonely people. The research has shown that people living in pair are more active and if they are not limited by health problems, they show greater diligence and activity. Partners support each other in their hobbies and encourage each other to action. The research could not cover the views of all seniors, but it has turned out that a positive approach to life and an active lifestyle significantly helps improve old age that should not be seen as a sad and final chapter of life.
