Keeping Traditions and Importance of Traditions in Contemporary Czech Society
URBÁNKOVÁ, Veronika
This thesis is focused on the importance of traditions for students and seniors, the importance of traditions for the both groups is compared and the differences in understanding to traditions in the presented groups of respondents are described. In the theoretical part relevant terms are defined and explained and the views of experts on the importance of traditions are mentioned. In the first section individual festivals in a year and related traditions, but also recent traditions coming from abroad, are described. In the second, practical part of the thesis individual respondents´ answers were assessed and the stated hypotheses verified. The hypotheses were tested through quantitative research and the method used to obtain information was a questionnaire survey. The questionnaire contained 57 questions and was filled in by university students and seniors over 65 years of age. The research outcomes confirmed the first hypothesis assuming that the lower the age of the Czech Republic citizens, the lower interest in keeping Czech traditions. The second hypothesis assuming that young people are more aware of traditions coming from abroad than of the Czech traditions, was also confirmed during the research. The objective of the thesis was to identify differences in perceptions of the importance of keeping traditions between generations, and this objective was met, in my opinion. The survey outcomes have shown that between groups of respondents there are some differences in perception of individual traditions, in the meaning given to individual traditions and the extent in which the Czech traditions are kept alive. Both groups, however, have a similar (negative) opinion of the modern traditions adopted from abroad. The importance of the thesis lies, in my opinion, in the description of individual generations relationships to Czech traditions as a demonstration of their own culture perception and the feeling of belonging to the society, but it also takes effect as a reminder of those often half-forgotten traditions and so the society´s cultural heritage, by pointing out the importance of intergenarational transmission of cultural values.
