Telicity and scalarity of deadjectival verbs in Czech
Lehečková, Eva ; Uličný, Oldřich (advisor) ; Filip, Hana (referee) ; Friedová, Mirjam (referee)
The dissertation deals with semantic relations between adjectives and deadjectival verbs in Czech. It focuses on the question how the property scale conveyed by adjectives is encoded in the semantics of deadjectival verbs. After the first chapter which presents the topic of the dissertation, in the second chapter, I describe the theoretical and methodological context of contemporary linguistics from a broader perspective in order to relate the theoretical and methodological procedures present in this paper to the current linguistic development. The third chapter pursues the semantics of adjectives in Czech and various approaches to their classification. It presents a scalar classification of adjectives according to which adjectives denote a scale of some property, i.e. an ordered set of degrees along a dimension. With support of empirical research (based on a questionnaire survey and corpus data) I show that it is possible to implement the scalar model into the description of Czech adjectives. This approach states that adjectives are one of many means in language that serve to express measurement (and attribute it to objects and individuals). At the end of the chapter, I propose a classification of Czech adjectives and generalize prototypical semantics of adjectival classes by vector constructions...
Adjectives in postposition: identification and the meaning of the noun phrase
Neubauerová, Alena ; Šaldová, Pavlína (advisor) ; Malá, Markéta (referee)
In the noun phrases, adjectives can be placed either before the noun (prepositively) or after the noun (postpositively). This thesis is concerned with the description of postponed adjectives and with the reasons for postposition. These reasons can be grammatical, semantic, or semantico-grammatical (for example, the phrase contains another adjective in a superlative degree, or the adjective has different meanings regarding its position in the phrase). The grammars used for this thesis list these reasons and divide them into categories that are all described in the theoretical part of this thesis. The use of postponed adjectives in practice is demonstrated using examples excerpted from the British National Corpus which were assigned into categories based on semantic and syntactic criteria. Those categories listed in the theoretical part of this thesis are supplemented by those established to describe the actual examples from the Corpus. Thirty adjectives were analyzed in detail and illustrate, e.g., cases of semantic difference between pre and post-head adjectives, terminological units or cases where the position is variable. From all these examples, the conclusions about the practical use of postposition are drawn.

Typology of Italian adjectives functioning as adverbs
KMEŤOVÁ, Kamila
The main theme of this bachelor's thesis is the typology of Italian adjectives working as adverbs. This work is divided into two parts: theoretical and analytical. The theoretical part deals with the basic characteristic of adjectives, adverbs and adjectives, which work as adverbs. The second chapter of this part is devoted to the structuring of these two word classes according to particular characteristics. The analytical part is based on a drawn up list of adjectives working as adverbs. With the assistance of Italian corpuses there are made samples of given verbs, which are together with the converted adverbs used for creating those constructions. Afterwards the adjectives are sorted out depending on the possibility of deriving the appropriate adverb. For adjectives handling this ability are both permissible constructions analyzed through semantic site. The aim of this bachelor's thesis is to compose as extensive list of these adjectives as possible and examine them deeply.
