The extent of awareness of canistherapy in the České Budějovice
PILÁTOVÁ, Kateřina
Abstract With the advancement of civilization, people are becoming more and more distant from nature and animals. That creates a subconscious longing in people to create substitute connections with nature. Canis-therapy, as a form of zoo-therapy, is a supporting rehabilitation method based on the contact of man and a dog and their positive interaction. The focus is especially on solving psychological, emotional and socio-interactive problems. The effect on physical health is secondary and is more about motivation. The main aim of this work was a complex monitoring of awareness of the problems of canis-therapy in České Budějovice among the students of individual departments of the University of South Bohemia and the professionals from selected health and care institutions. The outcomes of the practical part of the bachelors work are the results from the quantitative research where the method of asking questions was used; the technique was a standardised questionnaire. The research sample consisted of 150 students of the University of South Bohemia in České Budějovice and 45 professional staff from health and care institutions in České Budějovice. The working hypotheses presumed that the awareness of the problems of canis-therapy among the respondents will be low. In line with this hypothesis, unfamiliarity with conditions for practicing canis-therapy was presumed. The author attempted to find out if those who receive this type of zoo-therapy are aware of the providers of this so far unofficially approved social service. The data collected in the research clearly proved that more than two thirds of all respondents know the problems in question; however they are not clear on the conditions of the provision of this service. These results gave an impulse to practically focus on improving awareness of the conditions and practice of canis-therapy among professionals and general public alike through lectures, publications or leaflets. This work should also be used as informative and study material for starting and professional canis-therapy teams alike as it can help them develop their current position and especially improve their attitude to canis-therapy.
Animal Assisted Therapy in the Czech Republic in Relation to Professional Background and Dog-Handling Skills of the Therapists
SUDOVÁ, Markéta
In this piece I have attempted to perform descriptive quantitative research in the field of Animal-Assisted Activities and Animal-Assisted Therapies in the Czech Republic. I have placed emphasis on the professional background and dog handling skills of the dog-handler. I tried not only to focus on the impact of dogs on humans, but also to emphasize the importance of the personality of the therapist. I also consider the impact of different personality theories on the personality of the handler/therapist, and the importance of theoretical background and preparation in the given area in which the handler/therapist engages with dogs. Based on the positive respondent reactions, I trust that this research will prove to be of use to people involved in human-animal positive interactions.

The second part is devoted to the canine therapy from its beginning, i. e. since the beginning of a man´s coexistence with a dog. The theoretical part describes possibilities for providing the canine therapy in accordance with the current legislation. The author also devotes to a composition and training of a canine therapy team and to its preparation for passing of the canine therapy tests. Currently, there is missing a database of people who are engaged in the canine therapy in practice. An aim of the practical part of the diploma thesis is to design such a database structure that would allow an easier contact among these people and therefore an easier access to getting relevant information and experience. The database should contain information for people who are supposed to be interested in services of canine therapy teams. The author published a call in magazines Dog ? Man´s Friend and Dog´s World on websites. The call addressed people practising the canine therapy and it invited them to participate in the research. A technique of e-mail survey (CAMI) was used to collect the data. Further a questionnaire with open questions was used. The other used technique was a content analysis of documents. The database of people practising canine therapy in the Czech Republic has been created. At the same time the collected information has provided a basis to compare competences of these people. The database could be used in order to improve a communication, an exchange experience and a complex development of the field.
