Pupil's and Teacher's Attitudes towards Russian as the Second Foreign Language

This diploma thesis deals with the attitude of pupils and teachers towards Russian as the second foreign language in the Czech school environment. The theoretical part of the thesis focuses on the role of Russian in the contemporary world, the history and the current position of teaching the language at Czech schools. What is also described are the linguodidactic and psycholinguistic aspects of foreign language teaching. The practical part of the thesis analyzes the data gained via a questionnaire survey focusing primarily on the aspects of the pupils' motivation to studying Russian and their expectations. It also deals with the attitude of teachers towards teaching Russian as the second foreign language. The main aim of the thesis is to clearly prove or prove false statements about what types of pupils choose Russian and why. The thesis discovers that the most frequent reasons for the choice of Russian as the second foreign language are the simplicity of Russian (resemblance to Czech) and its euphoniousness and language attractiveness. The analysis of the gained data proves false the statement that Russian is chosen primarily by the pupils who dislike foreign languages. On the other hand, it proves the statement that it is often chosen by pupils with special educational needs. The survey also...

The dissertation analyses how to approach teaching of writing skills in Russian language at Czech secondary schools. In the theoretical part I define what a "writing skill" is. I focus on the linguistic, psycholinguistic and didactic aspects of the teaching of writing. I explain attitudes to writing skills in different teaching methods in history and nowadays. After that I set out the requirements for testing writing skills in some of the most common documents: Common European Framework for Languages, European Language Portfolio, international exams in Russian language ТРКИ (Тест русского языка как иностранного) or TORFL (Test of Russian as a Foreign Language) and the state final exam in Russian language at Czech secondary schools. In the practical part, I first analyse selected Czech and Russian textbooks for grammar schools to compare their approach towards teaching writing skills in native languages: Czech and Russian. Then I set out analysis of Czech textbooks used in the Czech Republic for teaching Russian, focusing in particular on the exercises used to teach writing. After that, I evaluate answers from two questionnaires that I gave to secondary school graduates and teachers of Russian. Russian and Czech Christmas Folk Traditions at the Lessons of Russian Language

The diploma thesis deals with the analysis and detailed description of the basic holidays of the civil year. The theoretical part of the thesis contains the study of the most popular folk traditions, religious rituals and beliefs of the Slavs, the way how Christian church (Catholic and Orthodox) influenced on the origin of fundamental traditions and rituals. There is also a description of the way the major Slavonic holidays are held. Czech and Russian traditions are compared in order to find some basic similarities and differences between them and to analyze the development of the traditions in historical context. Such issues as language pedagogy, intercultural language competence and how to use traditions at Russian lessons at primary and secondary schools are also emphasized in the work. The practical part of the thesis deals with the analysis of some books used for teaching Russian language at Czech schools in order to find out how customs, folk traditions and holidays are described and presented. Video Media Use in Russian Language Teaching

The thesis deals with the use of video media in the teaching of the Russian language. The first theoretical part is focused on informational and communications technologies in the education environment, especially to the video itself as a didactic instrument. The principles and techniques of working with the video as in didactic manner when teaching a foreign language are there described. The second practical part of the diploma thesis deals with the actual research in elementary and high schools. Russian animated TV series Masha and the Bear is used in Russian language lessons and then the didactic potential of this series is evaluated. Teachers' attitudes to using video in Russian language teaching is also examined with the results based on a questionnaire survey.
