The status and role of women in early christian communities as a paradigm for today

1 Abstract This thesis analyses the status and role of women in early Christian communities through the prism of Old Testament, New Testament texts, ancient novels, and apocryphal acts. The thesis uses comparative literary analysis to examine how women were portrayed in religious texts and what roles were assigned to them in the context of the social, religious, and political structures of the time. The aim of the thesis is to reveal how religious texts influenced the perception of women and what impact these stories, literary genres, and characters had on the actual position of women in society. The research highlights the differences between the portrayal of women in the Gospels and the apocryphal texts, emphasizing the polyvalence of the texts and the different interpretations of female characters in different cultural and historical contexts. The findings show that although women were often portrayed in subordinate or passive roles, there are significant examples where women took on active and leadership roles, suggesting more complex social dynamics than traditionally presented. Paul of Tarsus: Women and their role in the Gospel proclamation

Práce zkoumá úlohu žen v misi apoštola Pavla. Zvláštní pozornost je věnována autentickým protagonistkám zmiňovaným v Pavlových listech, zejména v listě Římanům a I. Korinťanům. Jejich pravděpodobné osudy a postavení ve společnosti jsou východiskem k otázkám po roli, jakou ženy reálně hrály ve formování prvních křesťanských obcí zakládaných či oslovovaných apoštolem Pavlem. Předmětem zkoumání jsou přístupy k ženám přítomné v autentických Pavlových listech a jinde v pavlovském korpusu, zejména v pastorálních epištolách. Zohledněny, i když spíše jen ve formě doplňkové a kontextuální, jsou taktéž informace, které k tématu nabízí líčení Skutků apoštolů. Stejný přístup je zvolen vždy, kdy téma vyžaduje odkazy na příslušná místa ostatních novozákonních textů. Přiměřený důraz je kladen na zasazení tématu do celkového dobového rámce, na popis pravděpodobného procesu vývoje Pavlova postoje k ženám a na charakteristiku Pavlovy mise a vnitřní dynamiku jím zakládaných obcí. V kontextu závěrečné shrnující analýzy jsou mimo jiné akcentovány problémy, spojené s interpretací sledovaného tématu. Dnem, kdy rozhodnutí nabylo účinnosti, pozbyl účastník řízení vysokoškolského vzdělání získaného studiem daného studijního oboru a akademického titulu magistr. Dále pozbyly platnosti vysokoškolský diplom a dodatek k diplomu. Barbora Sadilová Title Augustine's theology of resurrection in the light of Sermones 361-362 Abstract The submitted thesis aims to present Augustine's theology of the resurrection. After examining the biblical foundations of the theology of the resurrection, the thesis deals with the concept of the topic by selected patristic authors before Augustine. The second chapter presents Augustine's doctrine of Christ's resurrection as the cause and beginning of the final resurrection of the dead. In the third part, the work focuses first on the biblical grounding of Augustine's theology of the resurrection of the dead and his controversy with contemporary opponents of the resurrection, especially with Manichaeism and Neoplatonism. Subsequently, his conception of the eschatological resurrection of the body is systematically introduced and his vision of the renewed world and life in it is outlined. MAREK DOSPĚL Bīr Shawīsh, Small Oasis: Ostraka and Other Inscribed Material ABSTRACT The present dissertation is primarily a publication of a group of primary sources. These sources come from the recent archaeological exploration by Charles University in Prague of the site of Bīr Shawīsh in the Baḥrīya Oasis ("Small Oasis" in Classical Antiquity) in Egypt's Western Desert and consist of inscribed material written in Hellenistic Greek or koinē. Their majority belongs in the family of documentary texts, while a smaller group consists of informal inscriptions. Both texts and inscriptions are written or incised on fired potter's clay supports and can be dated to around 400 CE. The core of this dissertation consists of an annotated edition of these texts and inscriptions (Chapter 3), immediately followed by a synthetic and interpretative Chapter 4 in which the cardinal issues inherent to the published material are treated in detail. An important part of the edition are the analytical indices and appendices. Chapter 1 serves as a general introduction to the work; Chapter 2 presents the historical and archaeological context of the edited inscribed material. Roma locuta - causa finita. Authority of the Roman Bishop in the beginning of the 5th century seen through the letters of Innocent I

The thesis presents firstly the political and historical situation in the Late Roman Empire in which the Church was granted liberty. Through the historical events is shown how the theological discussions were jointed and influenced by the contemporary political situation of the Empire. Secondly, the life of the Pope Innocent I before and during his pontificate is presented and Nachleben of Innocent as a saint man, the style of his letters is involved too. In the same chapter is his pontificate described and discussed through letters, which he sent to various groups of bishops. These are divided into the following groups: Eastern bishops, bishops in Europe, boshops of Africa and the letters as a support for his friend John Chrysostom. In all these fields Innocent treats self-confidently, with the authority of the Roman bishop, but the kinds of claims to his authority depends on geographical location in which the letters are sent. Alongside the contribution of the basic introduction to the letters of the Pope Innocent I this thesis also offers the short excursion to the philological analysis and the selected theological topics (especially liturgical) of his letters.

Johannine christianity as a term lacking analytical potential

Cílem textu je popřít existenci tzv. janovského proudu křesťanství, popř. janovské komunity v 1. a 2. století, a ukázat, že tento termín je zavádějící a nemá analytický potenciál pro studium raného křesťanství. V první části se zabývám způsoby konstrukcí janovského křesťanství (dvou-úrovňové čtení, aplikace sociolingvistických teorií) a argumenty, které badatelé používají k doložení jeho existence (plurál v evangeliu, postava milovaného učedníka, dvacátá první kapitola evangelia, předpoklad rozdílného autorství Janových listů a čtvrtého evangelia, recepce Janova korpusu). Ve druhé části textu nabízím vlastní metodiku zkoumání společenských formací raného křesťanství, kterou aplikuji na čtvrté evangelium a Janovy listy. Argumentuji, že kdyby nějaká janovská komunita skutečně existovala a odvozovala svou nauku a praxi z těchto pramenů, nelišila by se od většinového křesťanství, a termín "janovské křesťanství" tak postrádá analytický potenciál. Hlavním argumentem textu je, že nelze z literárních a stylistických aspektů Janova korpusu odvozovat existenci distinktivního náboženského směru.

Johannine christianity as a term lacking analytical potential

In recent decades, most scholars have understood the Gospel of John and three letters of John as a mirror to the so-called "Johannine community"/"Johannine Christianity", whose existence is usually derived from literary and compositional aspects of Johannine corpus. In the following study I am arguing that in order for the term Johannine Christianity to be relevant and meaningful for the study of early Christianity and New Testament literature, we cannot focus on literary aspects of Johannine corpus but on a comparative work and define the term through the internal structure of religion. To be a historically relevant term, the term Johannine Christianity, therefore has to bear, in the context of the New Testament and early Christianity, distinctive doctrine, ritual practices, and institution. In the first part of this paper, I am dealing with literary and stylistic aspects of the Johannine corpus (authorship of gospel and letters, genre and 21st chapter of John's gospel, the beloved disciple, etc.) and arguing that these aspects are not a definite proof of the existence of so- called Johannine community.
