Large Scale modelling in geomechanics: elasticity, thermo-elasticity and iterative solvers
Blaheta, Radim ; Byczanski, Petr ; Starý, Jiří
Mathematical modelling of many geomechanical problems with the aid of the finite element method leads to high computational demands, which are concentrated in the solution of large-scale linear systems. This contribution adresses the solution of these systems by iterative methods based on CG and its generalizations, the use of space decomposition preconditioners and good initial guesses in a time stepping procedure.
Large scale FE analysis of stresses due to excavation and heating

Paper shows the requirements for the use of efficient iterative solvers and parallel high performance computing for solving linear systems, which arise from large scale 3-D finite element (FE) analysis of problems of elasticity and thermo-elasticity in geomechanics. We also summarize our experience and results relating to the use of problem decomposition iterative methods.
Robustní optimální víceúrovňové předpodmiňovače pro nekonformní konečněprvkové systémy
Blaheta, Radim ; Margenov, S. ; Neytcheva, M.
We study strategies to construct hierarchical basis function (HB) multilevel preconditioners for the algebraic systems arising from second order elliptic problems, discretized by the nonconforming Crouzeix-Raviart linear finite elements. To this end we follow the know framework for constructing HB preconditioners for conforming finite element methods (FEM).

In many fields of science and engineering, we can see challenging tasks, which require application of mathematical modelling. The physical phenomena are simulated with the aid of the finite element method and this simulation leads to huge computational demands, which are concentrated mainly to the solution of large-scale systems of equations. For such systems, we need high performance iterative solvers.
