Sámi poetry in Finland
Hořínová, Markéta ; Dlask, Jan (advisor) ; Kovář, Michal (referee)
This master's thesis deals with the topic of Sámi poetry. The main aim of this work was to examine the history and development of lyric poetry written in North Sámi in Finland. Apart from that I also tried to find certain attributes or trends common in Sámi poetry. In this thesis I used the encyclopedic method. In the first part of the thesis I examine the North Sámi yoik from a literary perspective. Yoik is often considered to be the foundation of Sámi literature and also in this work it has turned out to be very important for Sámi literary development. The influence of the yoik can be seen through the whole history of Sámi poetry. In the next chapters I introduce important poets and their work from the end of the 19th century to present. I focus mainly on authors originating from the Finnish side of Sámiland. In addition to that I present some important historical and social events that had an impact on literature. In the final chapter, I briefly deal with the situation in publishing and translating Sámi poetry. Because my knowledge of North Sámi is very limited, I analyzed all the literary works presented in this thesis with the help of Finnish or English translations. In spite of that I managed to find some common trends in Sámi poetry. Keywords: Finland, Sámi literature, poetry, yoik, Northern...

Hošková, Magdalena ; Dlask, Jan (advisor) ; Velkoborsky, Jan Petr (referee)
Author's name: Magdalena Hošková School: Charles University in Prague, Faculty of Arts Department: Institute of Linguistics and Finno-Ugric Studies Title: Spells as a Part of Finnish Folklore Supervisor: Mgr. Jan Dlask, Ph.D. Number of pages: 77 Key words: spell, Finnish spells, Finnish folklore, Kalevala, Finnish mythology, tietäjä, shaman, prayer, healing magic, homoeopathic magic, John Abercromby, James Frazer, neoshamanism, neopaganism This thesis deals with spells as a part of Finnish folklore. It depicts the circumstances of the spells' genesis, as well as their structural features and different purposes of their use. It is considered that most spells were created during the era of late paganism and early Christianity. This is true not only of Finland but also of Europe in general. The thesis also analyses the role of the shaman as the spiritual leader of Finnish people living in the era before the spells' creation and thereafter analyses the role of the shaman's successor: the tietäjä, the charmer who created spells and used them to help people in his community. So the tietäjä used his spells for the same purpose as his predecessor, the shaman, used trance states, which he entered via drumming, chanting and dancing. In the trance state, he talked to animal spirits and ancestors' spirits and...
Swan Symbolism in Finnish Poetry from Oral Tradition to Symbolist Movement
Švec, Michal ; Dlask, Jan (advisor) ; Parente Čapková, Viola (referee)
ENGLISH SUMMARY This master thesis focuses on swan symbolism in Finnish poetry, from the oldest folk poems of oral tradition to the first decades of the 20th century. Firstly a swan is described from the zoological and etymological point of view, and its position in the contemporary Finnish culture is clarified. The next chapter is dedicated to swan symbolism in European culture, from antiquity till presence, and it focuses on mythology, folk traditions and the most common motives in visual art, music and literature. The key part of the thesis describes the swan symbolism in Finnish oral tradition and especially in poetry of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. The thesis focuses in particular on Johan Ludvig Runeberg's, Aleksis Kivi's, Elias Lönnrot's, Juhani Aho's, Eino Leino's, Otto Manninen's and Aarni Kouta's poetry. A special chapter is devoted to the myth of the Swan of Tuonela. Following the swan symbolism throughout literature and culture history, I have been looking for connections to Finnish national as well as European traditions and intertextual relations.
The Tikkanen - Kihlman debate. Prelude. Works - reception - polemics
Dlask, Jan ; Parente Čapková, Viola (advisor) ; Čermák, Jan (referee) ; Gáborová, Margita (referee)
Henrik Tikkanen (1924 - 1984) and Christer Kih1man (bom 1930) are so called Fin1and-Swedish writers: they belong to the Swedish minority in Fin1and and they both write in Swedish. In genera1 they are viewed as authors who describe - and often go into rather intimate detail s - the "Fin1and-Swedish decadent upper c1ass". In the autumn 1975 Tikkanen pub1ished his autobiographica1 text Brandovagen 8 Brando Tel. 35 and Kih1man brought out his novel called Dyre prins. Both of the books are reviewed in the main Fin1and-Swedish newspapers and subsequently they provoke some discussions, whi1st the 1argest po1emics is risen in the beginning of 1976 by the te1evision appearence ofboth writers. This thesis called "The Tikkanen - Kihlman Debate. Prelude. Works - Reception - Polemics" seeks to exp1ain the events of the autumn 1975 and of the fi.rst ha1f of the year 1976, conceming the reception of the both works and the interconnected 1iterary debates. On the methodo10gica11eve1 the thesis hand1es the materia1 thematically by the standard method "adfontes" (supporting too11 - question WHAT), whi1e the interpretation in the first p1ace as a generation revolt is perfonned by means of the theory of literary field, based on so called Pierre Bourdieu's French Socio10gica1 Schoo1 (supporting too12 - question WHY). Juhani Aho and the analysis of his work "Alone"
Kimatraiová, Marika ; Velkoborsky, Jan Petr (referee) ; Dlask, Jan (advisor)
Czech literature in Finland (1993-2004)
Šroub, Jaroslav ; Dlask, Jan (advisor) ; Velkoborsky, Jan Petr (referee)
Hlavním cílem mé diplomové práce bylo sestavit bibliografický seznam děl české literatury vydaných vobdobí 1993-2004, a především zpracovat přijetí této tvorby finskou kritikou.
