Animal Characters in Portuguese and Brazilian Folk Literature
Krajanská, Eva ; Grauová, Šárka (advisor) ; Válová, Karolina (referee)
In this work we deal with an analysis of roles occupied by seven animal characters chosen from Portuguese and Brazilian folk literatures. Our objective is to find out if it is possible that different animals from different places represent the same characteristics for which they are chosen to a specific story. The main part of our work is divided in two parts entitled "Shrewdness" and "Naivety and stupidity x strength and voracity". Within the first chapter we analyze the fox and the chick, representatives from Portugal and the turtle, the golden hare and the monkey that represent Brazil. The second chapter contains only two representatives, the wolf for the Portuguese folk literature and the jaguar for the Brazilian one. This chapter is complicated because the two representatives fill multiple functions that can form opposition to each other. In the introduction we explain the important terms like folklore, oral folk literature, animal tale, fable, myth and legend. Then we also mention the crucial points that characterize the both folk literatures. We discover that the animal tales and fables are typical for Portugal whereas in Brazil we will mostly talk about myths and legends. We also find out that the animal tales occur much more in Brazilian folk literature than in the Portuguese one. In the...

Sivčáková, Michaela ; Grauová, Šárka (advisor) ; Válová, Karolina (referee)
This thesis will take a closer look at the relatively new and multifaceted concept of Lusophony. It begins with a brief introduction to Portuguese colonial history and postcolonial development with a focus on the connection between Portuguese national identity, the colonial empire and today's Lusophone world. Subsequently, this thesis will present various conceptions of the colonial empire and the panorama of the transformations of colonial and anti-colonialist narratives through which Portuguese colonization and decolonization were justified. Among other things, this thesis aims to explore the topic of Lusophony in historical contexts, to examine the circumstances of this idea's origin and its development in Portugal, and, finally, to present some conceptualizations in the current academic context. Lastly, the main problems that Lusophony struggles with in the postcolonial context will be considered, specifically its relationship with the colonial past(s). Between Reality and Fiction: Antonio Callado's Bar Don Juan
Foretová, Michaela ; Grauová, Šárka (advisor) ; Válová, Karolina (referee)
This thesis deals with the twentieth century Brazilian writer Antônio Callado and his novels written during the Brazilian dictatorship. The aim of this work is to bring the author's literary work, which has not been translated into Czech yet, closer to the Czech reader. Based on the historical context of the Brazilian military dictatorship in 1964-1985, we deal with the urban and rural left-wing resistance, which was quickly suppressed. Further, we focus on how dictatorship and censorship have influenced artistic creation. Subsequently, we concentrate on the author's life and the analysis of three selected works written and published during the dictatorship. The analysis seeks to find out how Callado represented the Brazilian leftist movements in these three novels: Kuarup (Quarup, 1967), Reflections of the Ball (Reflexos do Baile, 1976), Don Juan's Bar (Bar Don Juan, 1971).

Sýkorová, Barbora ; Válová, Karolina (advisor) ; Grauová, Šárka (referee)
The bachelor thesis deals with the Amazon as an intersection in Milton Hatoum's books . The objective of the thesis is to find in his novel Two brothers and in the novella Orphans of Eldorado specific features of this region and name them as the signs of meeting, impacting and blending. The thesis is based on the history of the Amazon region, on geography and on the literature dealing with this topic. It focuses on the analysis of the novel and the novella. The common theme of both books is primarily the environment - the city of Manaus. The analysis finds in the novel the intersections in the field of ethnicities, cultures and regions. There are many motives in the novella in common with the novel, but the analysis finds other intersections in the economic and social field as well as in the presence of the reality and myths. Finding the intersections of the Amazon in the books of Milton Hatoum can help to understand the complexity of the Amazon. It can also contribute to the appreciation of the literary work of this contemporary Brazilian writer.
