This Bachelor's thesis is focused on description of situation which occurred after presidential elections in Mexico in 2006 when newly elected president Felipe Calderón launched massive operation targeted on eradicating drug cartels using both police and military capacities. This operation however meant huge upheaval and rise of violence caused not only by clashes of cartels with government but also by fights among warring cartels struggling for power and territory. Dual Securitization of Public Space in Relation to Sport Mega Events
Svitková, Katarína ; Hynek, Nikola (advisor) ; Ditrych, Ondřej (referee)
The objective of this study is to examine security measures in cities hosting sports mega events. Using International political sociology as a theoretical background, I argue that city spaces undergo what I refer to as dual securitization. I identify four principal characteristics of security measures which have become globally standardized and which I consider illiberal: exceptionalism, surveillance, militarization and urban restrictions. In the case studies, I explore how these measures were justified and employed during the Olympic Games or the FIFA World Cup in Beijing, South Africa, London and Rio de Janeiro. Despite some differences which are due to local realities, I argue that the approaches of the principal stakeholders in the four cities are very much alike. Regardless of the type of political regime or the degree of socio-economic development, exceptionality of mega events serves as an impetus for wide-scale and profound surveillance and militarization of contemporary cities. In the process, securing public spaces and urbanites comes at the expense of individual liberties.

Svitková, Katarína ; Ulík, Karel (advisor) ; Raška, Francis (referee)
Bibliografický záznam SVITKOVÁ, Katarína. Porovnanie jadrovej politiky posledných dvoch amerických administratív. George W. Bush a Barack Obama. Praha, 2011. 57 s. Bakalárska práca (Bc.) Univerzita Karlova, Fakulta sociálních věd, Institut mezinárodních studií. 2011. Vedúci bakalárskej práce Mgr. Karel Ulík. Abstract The topic of the bachelor thesis is a comparison of George W. Bush and Barack Obama`s approaches to nuclear policy issues. The principal argument is based on a presumption that although there are partial differences between the two in terms of rhetoric and instruments used, the two administration`s primary goals are identical, just as the security threats they are based on. A brief characterization of new security environment is followed by a chapter dedicated to President George W. Bush with an evaluation of his nuclear policy steps like international agreements and the relationship with countries which refuse to comply with international norms. The focus is also on the issue of weapons of mass destruction as a pretext to military interventions abroad. The next chapter analyzes the current President Barack Obama`s nuclear policy measures such as the New START Treaty, prevention of fissile material proliferation and, equally as the previous chapter, the approach towards North Korea and Iran....
Essays on Philanthropy
Svítková, Katarína ; Ortmann, Andreas (advisor) ; Bekkers, René (referee) ; Bilodeau, Marc (referee)
The basic concern of any empirical work is to employ statistical data that correspond to the notion of the theoretical variables in the model. The problems and economic consequences connected with the measurement of selected economic variables are the focus of this thesis. It consists of three chapters that in succession analyze the issues associated with the measurement of economic growth, multi-factor productivity and capital input into production. The first chapter looks into the differences among the growth rates of GDP per capita based on data from the three most commonly used databases, namely International Financial Statistics, World Development Indicators and Penn World Table. Using a wide international dataset, we find significant differences in the growth rates that are mainly due to the adjustment for cross-country comparability of GDP per capita levels. Importantly, these differences are correlated with the level of development. We replicate six recent studies of growth determinants and find their results sensitive to the choice of data. The second chapter analyses the sensitivity of calculated multi-factor productivity (MFP) growth to assumptions of growth accounting, concentrating on the measurement of quantity, composition and the respective shares of labor and capital inputs, and...

Osvědčení jako schůdný mechanismus zajištění kvality v tranzitivních ekonomikách: důkazy, teorie a otevřené otázky
Ortmann, Andreas ; Svítková, Katarína ; Krnáčová, A.
In this article we discuss a form of enforcement that relies much less, or not at all, on the state, and that relies on the market only indirectly: Certification agencies force their members to reveal their (good) type through costly signals that can be “engineered” to induce a separating equilibrium. We discuss the viability of this system of enforcement in an environment where state and market have failed to deliver a satisfying degree of quality assurance (namely, fundraising), and also discuss related information systems and systems of quality assurance.
