"Two views of the woman" (Female characters in selected novels of Theodor Fontan and Ignát Herrmann)

The thesis deals with female characters of selected Berlin novels by Theodor Fontane and Prague novels by Ignát Herrmann. By the way of analysis and interpretation of individual works the thesis shows the two notions of woman, her traditional roles and position in the patriarchal society of the last third of the nineteenth century. The work seeks causes of the dominance of female characters in novels. It presents their possible typology and on the basis of comparison and confrontation demonstrates their common and different features. Family relationships and relationships of couples are described as well as various attitudes to love, various motivations for marriage, causes and consequences of dysfunctional marriages. There is also analysis of the ways of artistic depiction of topics which represented social taboo, and of the creative techniques that are specific for the two writers. Another part of the work is an outline of the contemporary social atmosphere with emphasis on the prevailing convention, as well as a comparative exposition about the lives and works of the authors and an attempt to give a true picture of the particularity of their prose. The last part of the work is a substantiation of the perception of women as victims of their environment.

What was Caused Upon the Finding of Handwritten Documents

Cílem mé diplomové práce bylo ukázat, jakým způsobem naše dvě nejznámější a také najdiskutovanejší rukopisné památky, Rukopis královédvorský a zelenohorský, ovlivnily literární, politické a kulturní dění v 19. století a jak bylo toto téma zpracováno v průběhu posledních sto padesáti let v českých učebnicích literatury a v čítankách. V úvodní informativní části práce jsem se věnovala sporným evropským a českým rukopisným nálezům a jejich vzniku jako důsledku dobového evropského trendu. Velkou pozornost jsem věnovala průběhu rukopisných bojů o uznání pravosti našich nálezů. Všechna tato fakta, společně s pasáží dokumentující velký inspirační vliv Rukopisů na českou literaturu, divadlo, hudbu a výtvarné umění, mi sloužila jako východisko pro druhou část práce, výzkumnou. V druhé části jsem se zaměřila na české učebnice literární historie a čítanky z období od druhé poloviny 19. století až do současnosti. Jde tedy o časový úsek přibližně sto padesáti let, který jsem pro přehlednost rozčlenila do několika etap, rovněž jsem tituly rozdělila na učebnice literární historie a čítanky. Jindřich Šimon Baar - the personality and the work

Jindřich Šimon Baar, a Catholic priest and writer, is famous for his books with the Catholic problems and above all for his novels with rural themes. His most famous books are the novel "Jan Cimbura" and the trilogy from Chodsko "Paní komisarka", "Osmačtyřicátníci" and "Lůsy". The big part of his work was also collecting of the folklore of Chodsko, above all collecting of fairy tales, legends, numery rhymes and texts of many folk songs. Before writing about Chodsko, Baar wrote a story about the farmer from Putim Jan Cimbura. In this book Baar tried to show that was very important to save the prodigy of the rustic life and all rustic values for the future generations. The writer felt that the most of fundamental values of human life, for example the respect to traditions, old customs, to the heritage of our ancestors, to religion, to the soil etc. had been fading away from the human consciousness. Baar tried to save these values by collecting the texts of folk songs, fairy tales, legends, numery rhymes, riddles and folk costumes and all things that were connected with Chodsko in general. Prague in novels of Gustav Meyrink

This thesis deals with the picture of the city of Prague in the novels of Gustav Meyrink. The introduction provides historical background of the German literature in the Czech lands and describes the genesis of a phenomenon called the Prague German literature including its best-known representatives. Further it outlines the life of Gustav Meyrink, including his Prague stay, and the creation of his works. The main portion of this thesis is dedicated to analysis of three novels that are located in Prague, either partially or fully. The individual chapters describe the topography of Prague used in Meyrink's novels and its historical accuracy, characters and legends connected to the city and the general image of Prague as it changes in connection to the plot and the behavior of the characters. The conclusion introduces the comparison of these novels, their common features and differences.

Historical prose of Jiří Šotola

Diplomová práce nazvaná Historické prózy Jiřího Šotoly se zabývá, jak už název napovídá, úseku tvorby Jiřího Šotoly, kterému se věnoval od konce šedesátých do osmdesátých let dvacátého století. Je řazena do české historické prózy, a proto je jí v práci věnována obecně pojatá úvodní část, která je diferenciována do různých kapitol. Je zaměřena na tradici historické prózy, proměny historické beletrie od jejích počátků spojených s národně obrozeneckým hnutím druhé poloviny devatenáctého století, přes literární tendence první poloviny dvacátého století až po nastínění situace let sedmdesátých a osmdesátých. Druhá část práce je věnována samotnému autorovi historických próz Jiřímu Šotolovi. Je zde stručně načrtnuta autorova biografie, včetně celoživotní tvorby. Shledáváme v něm všestranného literáta. Byl autorem nejen historických děl, ale také vynikajícím básníkem, dramatikem, žurnalistou, redaktorem, překladatelem... . Po krátkém představení autora následuje stěžejní část práce - chronologicky řazená díla, z nichž každému (šest románů a jedna novela) je věnována vždy jednotlivá kapitola, která je zaměřena na jeho vlastní analýzu. Change in prosaic processing of occupation during World War Two theme in Czech literature between 1945 and 1965

Author of this graduation thesis focused on the prose processing the theme of World War Two in Czech literature between years 1945 and 1965. The main point is to demonstrate basic schemes of portraying the World War Two theme in Czech literature and to analyze fundamental works of this period. In particular chapters, author especially engages in immediate reaction of the documentary and fable prose on the war, generation conflict, elaboration of Jewish matter together with holocaust and prose with existential motives. Analyzing books of Julius Fučík, Jan Drda, Josef Škvorecký, Arnošt Lustig and Ladislav Fuks, the author shows different forms of prose with war theme and presenting its main tendencies.

Probléms of childhood in prose of Martina Drijverová

In my bachelor thesis I concentrate on book themes, types of characters including the narrator's resemblance and a portrayal of the environment in Martina Drijverová's selected prose. The books involved: "Táta k příštím Vánocům ", "Táta pro radost i pro zlost", "Táta nemá smutky rád", "Sísa Kyselá", "Sísa Kyselá a ušmudlaný rytíř", "Zajíc a sovy", "Nekonečné prázdniny" and "Domov pro Marťany". In the first part of the thesis I focus on a brief biography and bibliography of the author. I also define a genre of prose story of children's life. I also deal with Martina Drijverová's position among other Czech authors of this genre. In the main part I deal with themes that the author used in her prose - a child and a single parent family, an outsider, a child friendship and a child with disability. The themes are still actual for today's children. Then I pay attention to types of characters. It is the largest part of my thesis. It covers a characteristic of protagonists in the books and also the narrator's resemblance. In narration of girl characters the author used the first-person narrative mode as a way to express their thoughts and feelings. In stories of boys Drijverová used the third-person narrative mode.
