Pavel Kohout - officer, dissident and writer

This diploma work deals with the personal developement of Pavel Kohout - his beliefs and his work. Pavel Kohout has been a Czech and Austrian poet, a representative of the Czech constructive poetry, a playwright, a translator and later an important writer of samizdat (self-publishing) and exile literature. The diploma work is an attempt to make a complete monography of a controversial personality of Czech culture, politics and literature from the 50s of the 20th century to recent time. The first part describes his private life including the social and political consequences - it shows the movement from his political engagement in the Youth Organization called Svazarm to the role of an important representative of the Czech dissent. The second part deals with the interpretation of selected 6 pieces of his work - Verše a písně (Verses and Songs), Záříjové noci (September Nights), Taková láska (Such a Love), Katyně (The Hangwoman), Kde je zakopán pes ( Where the Dog is Burried) and Sněžím (I am Snowing). In these pieces of work, the author of the diploma work tries to show the connections between his lyrical, dramatical and prozaic work influenced with his political engagement. Laws of nature and humankind in rural stories of Vítězslav Hálek

The thesis deals with literary production of Vítězslav Hálek - namely his rural short stories. I have tried to observe evolution of both the writer and his work in two creative periods of his life: 1857 - 1863 and 1871 - 1874. I am focusing on comparison of the stories written in two productive stages of Vítězslav Hálek, searching for both common features and the differences. I pay special attention to images of natural scenery, their function in the storyline and the importance of nature in human life. In Halek's approach, nature is ruled by essential laws which should be abided and respected by people. Therefore the main part of my thesis is concerned with individual images of nature laws and their comparison with the laws applicable in human society. AdditionalIy, I take account of Halek's career as well as his literary production, which has been listed in the record. Hálek read well in all his life, he was considered popular and recognised author, however, some of his stories are hard to find these days. There do not even exist contemporary belles-lettres on Vítězslav Hálek. My study is based primarily on Halek's correspondence, small biographic essays and, lastly, on analysis of narrative texts. In the last chapture I derive from selected texts of secondary-school-anthologies.

Historical prose of Jiří Šotola

Diplomová práce nazvaná Historické prózy Jiřího Šotoly se zabývá, jak už název napovídá, úseku tvorby Jiřího Šotoly, kterému se věnoval od konce šedesátých do osmdesátých let dvacátého století. Je řazena do české historické prózy, a proto je jí v práci věnována obecně pojatá úvodní část, která je diferenciována do různých kapitol. Je zaměřena na tradici historické prózy, proměny historické beletrie od jejích počátků spojených s národně obrozeneckým hnutím druhé poloviny devatenáctého století, přes literární tendence první poloviny dvacátého století až po nastínění situace let sedmdesátých a osmdesátých. Druhá část práce je věnována samotnému autorovi historických próz Jiřímu Šotolovi. Je zde stručně načrtnuta autorova biografie, včetně celoživotní tvorby. Shledáváme v něm všestranného literáta. Byl autorem nejen historických děl, ale také vynikajícím básníkem, dramatikem, žurnalistou, redaktorem, překladatelem... . Po krátkém představení autora následuje stěžejní část práce - chronologicky řazená díla, z nichž každému (šest románů a jedna novela) je věnována vždy jednotlivá kapitola, která je zaměřena na jeho vlastní analýzu. Literary pictures of Mladá Boleslav

Mladá Boleslav is a town with long and rich cultural tradition, which has been linked with lots of literary active personalities. The name Mikuláš Klaudián and his famous Brethern's print shop are connected with Brethern Unity. The writer Alois Vojtěch Šmilovský, born in Mladá Boleslav, reminded his birthplace especially in his short stories. The writer Ferdinand Schulz stayed for two years in Mladá Boleslav as a student and described them in his book called Latinská babička. At the beginning of 20th century writer Karel Sellner came to Mladá Boleslav and his further educational activities of a school inspektor, homeland sciontist and writer enriched the life of Mladá Boleslav community. "Two views of the woman" (Female characters in selected novels of Theodor Fontan and Ignát Herrmann)

The thesis deals with female characters of selected Berlin novels by Theodor Fontane and Prague novels by Ignát Herrmann. By the way of analysis and interpretation of individual works the thesis shows the two notions of woman, her traditional roles and position in the patriarchal society of the last third of the nineteenth century. The work seeks causes of the dominance of female characters in novels. It presents their possible typology and on the basis of comparison and confrontation demonstrates their common and different features. Family relationships and relationships of couples are described as well as various attitudes to love, various motivations for marriage, causes and consequences of dysfunctional marriages. There is also analysis of the ways of artistic depiction of topics which represented social taboo, and of the creative techniques that are specific for the two writers. Another part of the work is an outline of the contemporary social atmosphere with emphasis on the prevailing convention, as well as a comparative exposition about the lives and works of the authors and an attempt to give a true picture of the particularity of their prose. The last part of the work is a substantiation of the perception of women as victims of their environment.

The image of woman in Lenka Reinerova's memoirs

The thesis deals with the image of a woman in Lenka Reinerova's memoirs published in Czech. The topic is first showed partially, which means separately for each single memorial prose, chronologically according to a year of their publishing, and afterwards coherently by means of general features included at the beginning of the work. The image of a woman is showed by way of both direct and indirect characterization and comparison. Introductory part of the work is connected wih the Prague Circle and its last member Lenka Reinerová, the last Prague author writing in German. The topic of the Prague Circle and Lenka Reinerova's place in Prague literature written in German as well are envisaged problematically. The aim of the first part of the work is to specify some characterizations which are common for all members of the Prague Circle and to specify Lenka Reinerova's place in Prague German literature more accurately by quoting the contemporary authors writing in German and at the same time related to Prague in the broad sense of the word.

"Unseeable Prague" of Gustav Meyrink. The picture of the city in Meyrink's tales and novels

Das Thema der Diplomarbeit ist die Abbildung der Stadt Prag im Werk von Gustav Meyrink. Der Gegenstand der Analyse sind die Erzählungen mit Prager Thematik und Romane Der Golem (1915), Walpurgisnacht (1917) und Der Engel vom westlichen Fenster (1927). In diesen Texten werden verschiedene Bilder der Stadt und die Funktion des Raums im Rahmen der Handlung verfolgt. In den Erzählungen konzentriert sich man vor allem auf die Atmosphäre der Stadt, die sich im Zusammenhang mit dem Charakter der Gattung verändert. In den satirischen Erzählungen ist die Stadt der Gegenstand von Kritik und Spott, in den phantastischen Erzählungen ist sie ein zauberhafter, magischer und geheimnisvoller Ort. Mit den Romanen beschäftigt sich man vor allem als mit Romanen der Initiation. Die Analyse orientiert sich an Bild und Rolle der Stadt in der Handlung und an symbolische Ausnutzung ihres Raums. Man konzentriert sich mehr auf einzelne Stadtviertel, die hier vornehmlich als geheimnisvolle Orte charakterisiert werden.

Heroines of Růžena Svobodová's selected prosaic works

Diplomová práce předkládá analýzu ženských postav Růženy Svobodové. Základem charakteristiky hrdinek se stalo pět prozaických děl autorky. Práci lze rozdělit na dvě části- syntetickou a analytickou. V první části je obsažen stručný nástrin života Svobodové, problematika postavení žen ve společnosti 19. století a emapncipace. Analytická část předkládá charakteristiku vybraných postav, seznamuje čtenáře s jejich životními názory a postoji. V závěru práce je podáno shrnutí jednotlivých typů hrdinek.

Ignát Herrmann Saw it Like This. Prague Through the Eyes of Ignát Herrmann

Ignát Herrmann se jako představitel žánrového realismu literatury přelomu 19. a 20. století ve své práci soustředil zejména na vykreslení běžného života obyvatel Prahy své doby. V centru jeho zájmu stáli lidé patřící ke střední společenské vrstvě tehdejšího měšťanstva žijícího v moderních či nově vznikajících pražských čtvrtích (Nové Město, Vinohrady), zajímaly ho ale i osudy obyvatel tehdejší periferie, zejména pražského Podskalí. Právě díky svému zaměření pro nás Herrmannovo dílo představuje vynikající zdroj informací o životě Pražanů na přelomu 19. a 20. století - o jejich sociálním zázemí, životním stylu, zvycích, zálibách, společenském životě apod. Zachycení každodenní reality tehdejších měšťanů, jak ji prezentuje Herrmann ve svých dílech, bylo hlavním cílem této práce. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)
