Martin Salcman 1896-1979
Brabec, Tomáš ; Lahoda, Vojtěch (advisor) ; Wittlich, Petr (referee)
History of the modern 20th century art resembles a jungle of styles, full of personal or collective expresslons and many errant ways. Big roads of early 20th century -ISMs were planned and marked out by names known today around the world or at least In Europe. These maln streams navigated whole groups of artists and their followers. They were, however, very often interconnected with a complicated network of sidewalks, shortcuts and detours, full of hard working individuals searching for their own complex, but still unique invention. Staying in the shade and trying to understand similarities between the "high art" of their famous companions, they became philosophical bridges between styles as well as tireless engineers dismantling or connecting them. 1artin Salcman was such an individual. He was born In ~896 in a poor family. His father died when he was 10, his mother shortly after he became 14. Still a student of local secondary school he has shown his strong sense for artistic expression and doubtless talent. It may have been recognized by some of his relatives or school authorities. His self-portrait "A Young Boy dressed in a Working Cloth", surprisingly 1n oil, 1S certainly untouched by any professional training but it clearly shows Salcman's future potential. It 1S necessary to admit that Around the his...
Vladimír Grégr and architecture in Czechoslovakia during the interwar years
Sosnovcová, Eva ; Lahoda, Vojtěch (advisor) ; Kratochvíl, Petr (referee)
The subject of this thesis is Czech architect Vladimír Grégr (1902-1943). His buildings are mainly in Prague, and concentrated in the Barrandov Terraces area. So far academic scholarship has focused on the aerodynamic aspect of his work, a trend which was also current in Germany and Poland, and represented by a group of architects called Der Ring, which included figures such as Hugo Häring, Hans Scharoun, Adolf Rading, Max and Bruno Taut. While this influence is certainly present in Grégr's buildings that date from 1930-33, it occupies a relatively minor part of his career as a whole, when compared to subsequent projects dating from 1933-1940. The end of this second period is marked by his arrest by the Nazis, an imprisonment which lasted until his execution in Plötzensee in 1943. It was during this second phase when Grégr constructed romanticized Spanish villas, resembling cottages with their saddle roofing, wooden shutters and arcades. As yet we can only speculate as to why he changed his architectural style, but it appears to be a deliberate regression from Functionalism and has more in common with Frank Lloyd Wright, Czech folk architecture and elements of the German trend, heimatstil. I also describe parallel cases in Czech architecture of the same period, which suggests that Grégr's approach to...

Mladičová, Iva ; Wittlich, Petr (advisor) ; Klimešová, Marie (referee) ; Lahoda, Vojtěch (referee)
1 Abstract A monograph on Jan Kotík (1916-2002) introduces both his art and theoretical work, it deals with a historical and cultural context of the now-defunct Czechoslovakia. Kotík's - an artist's, theoretician's, published author's, educator's - artwork enjoys a prominent position in the context of Czech art of the second half of 20th century. An art-historical assessment of artwork was based on Kotik's artwork inventory and on all the documentation on Kotik's life and art work archived in the Documentation Department of the Institute of Art History of the Academy of Sciences of the CR and in private archives in the CR and Berlin. The study is based on a method of organic combination of biographical data and art-historical data with quotation of Kotik's theoretical texts. An evolution of artist's work is demonstrated chronologically with the context to Czech and world art. The monograph includes chapters: "Father Pravoslav's Art Studio and Study Years", "Art Group 42", "Possibilities of Applied Art", "Painting-Object", "Stay in Berlin", "Returns".
Rembrandt and Vermeer: two philosophical concepts of art
Černá Pivovarová, Maria ; Konečný, Lubomír (advisor) ; Lahoda, Vojtěch (referee)
The thesis Rembrandt and Vermeer: Two Philosophers of Art is devoted to two artistic concepts. The most striking representatives of these two concepts, whom we can observe throughout the entire history of art, are Rembrandt van Rijn and Johannes Vermeer. The differing philosophy of art of these two artists is presented in two selected paintings: Rembrandt's Self-Portrait with Saskia and Vermeer's canvas The Art of Painting. Both Rembrandt and Vermeer opened up the path for modern art, which is why works that were influenced by the art of these Baroque masters over the course of later centuries have also been included in the thesis.

The bachelor thesis is dealing with the term sublime in both theoretical and practical level. The development of theories of the sublime and its reflection in fine art is analyzed from the antiquity to the 19th Century. In chapters on the Romantic period the term sublime is reflected in landscape painting in Bohemia, United Kingdom, Switzerland, Germany, Norway and America. The emphasis is put on the reflection in works of two artists- British painter Joseph William Turner and German painter Caspar David Friedrich.
