Tell Me How Long the Train's Been Gone by James Baldwin: translation and stylistic analysis of three representative fragments

This bachelor thesis is focused on the problems which may occur, while translating from English into Czech, using the novel Tell Me How Long the Train's Been Gone by the American author James Baldwin. The practical part contains chosen extracts from The House Nigger. The theoretical part aims at the analysis of my translation. Special attention is paid to the problematic sections, which have been encountered while translating. Final decisions are provided with my comments often with regard to the helpful quotes from the books dealing with translation theories, especially by Jiří Levý and Dagmara Knittlová. The image of the city in contemporary British literature. The city in the works of Martin Amis and Ian McEwan

The city and its milieu have always been a source of inspiration and motifs for artists and writers are no exception. The process of urbanization brought along rapid social, political, cultural and economic changes which evoked immediate responses of various kinds, from welcoming and celebrating ones to those of rejection and condemnation, from those who were traditionally the most sensitive about such phenomena ~ men of letters. As a result of this fact, the image of the city has been present in literature since the first urban societies appeared and to trace it back in detail would mean a different aim from that which this work is going to follow. The main concern of my thesis is contemporary British literature and therefore I would like to focus on how the city is reflected in the works of British writers in the last two decades of the twentieth century. To provide certain general coherence, continuity and context of the theme, I will also put down a brief outline of how the image of the city has been developing and changing in English literature since the late Victorian period trying to show that the phenomenon is very deep-rooted in the tradition of the English imagination. Management plan of small water supply reservoirs of Landštejn type

The aim of the methodology is to provide managers and users of small water reservoirs Landštejn type with methodological tools for optimization of the water quality monitoring based on the current level of knowledge and research. Furthermore, provides a design of a methodology for fish community monitoring and optimization of treatments to reduce unwanted fish species and strengthen the status of suitable fish species with the aim of achieving the topdown effect and maintaining or improving water quality in these water reservoirs. The presented methodology summarizes the findings obtained during the monitoring and evaluation of selected parameters of water quality, planktonic and fish communities in water supply reservoirs Landštejn in recent years. It also contains an evaluation of applied treatments, focused mainly on fish stock. Unwanted fish species were caught and the predatory fish were stocked with the aim of optimizing the fish community composition and positively influencing the quality of the water in the reservoirs. The methodology contains recommendations for monitoring of the water quality in the reservoir, including monitoring of planktonic communities, monitoring of fish and recommended manipulation with fish stock. The methodology provides guidance and information for optimization of monitoring and treatments for small water supply reservoirs of the Landštejn type.

This bachelor thesis deals with translation of the initial fourty pages of the novel Stacraft: Uprising by Micky Neilson. The Thesis consists of a Practical and a Theoretical part. The Practical part contains the English original text and the translation of its initial chapters. The Theoretical part is then a stylistic analysis of the translation, which focuses on differences between English and Czech and other issues i had to cope with during the translation. Six Months, Three Days - a translation and comparative analysis of a novella by Charlie Anders

In this bachelor thesis I am dealing with the problems that may occur during translation, in this from English to Czech. As a foundation material I used a novelette Six Months, Three Days written by Charlie Jane Anders. The thesis is divided into practical part and theoretical part. The first, practical part consists of the translation of the whole novelette Six Months, Three Days. The second, theoretical part consists of my analysis of the translation, which is focused on the problems I had to solve during the translation process. I comment on the choices I made, usually justifying by translation theories of Jiří Levý and Dagmar Knittlová. Translation of two English short stories

This BA thesis is focused on the translation of two short stories by V.S. Pritchett and their stylistic analysis. The thesis consists of the practical and the teoretical part. The outcome of the former is the side-by-side translation. The latter lays emphasis on differences between Czech and English in terms of morpohology, lexicology and syntax and various problems and the peculiarities one might come across while translating a longer text.
