The Municipal Baths
Vrbka, Jan ; Kyselka, Mojmír (referee) ; Makovský, Zdeněk (advisor)
Are municipal bath built next to Voronez Hotel able to compete with other such facilities? The key is to create a specific atmosphere. The bath steeps from the ground to offer views over city. Another part of the strategy is a presence of relative functions in the building – you can meet many activities, which you would not expect in public bath. But what is the most important: you can enjoy these activities in intimate environment or in the public space as well. For example: you can take a tea in a bar situated in the sixth floor with exclusive view over opposite hill or you can take different tea in a small informal teahouse hidden in the middle of the disposition. An all-embracing structure of differently juxtaposed reinforced concrete boxes creates a frame for this different human experience.

The term spa is associated with water treatment which is also known as balneotherapy. Spa towns or spa resorts (including hot springs resorts) typically offer thermal or mineral water for drinking and bathing. They also offer various health treatments. The belief in the curative powers of mineral waters goes back to prehistoric times. Such practices have been popular worldwide, but are especially widespread in Europe and Japan. Day spas are also quite popular, and offer various personal care treatments.

The Municipal Baths is designed for both residents and visitors to the city for hotel guests. Philosophy of distribution space is based on two needs of people. One is spending time in the company and the second is the need for isolation and tranquility. The main pool area is a zone extrovert with a link to the external environment (Špilberk views, waterfront, river, Red Hill, Petrov). Center is as a wall (zone introvert) into which you enter for the purpose of isolation, meditation and relaxation.

THE MAIN MATERIAL AIM WAS TO CREATE 2 VOLUMES WITH COMPLEMENTING ITS FUNCTIONAL USAGE AND FROM THIS RESULTING ALSO DIFFERENTIATION OF FACADES OF PARTICULAR VOLUMES. THE BUILDING EXPRESSION CORRESPONDES TO FUNCTIONAL FEATRUES OF PARTICULAR BUILDINGS BUT TO URBANISTIC LOCATION TOO. THE THEATRE IS SOMETIMES CALLED „BLACK BOX“ BEACAUSE OF THE CLOSED BUILDING CHARACTER, EMBEDING THE AUDITORIUM IN THE CENTRE OF THE BUILDING AND BY POSITIONING RELATING ALL FUNCTIONS AROUND. I USED THE SAME CONCEPTION FOR MY DESIGN. THE DISPOSITION DEPENDS ON THE CONSTRUCTION SYSTEM WHICH GOES THROUGH THE COMPLETE OBJECT AND WHICH IS THE CARCASE CONSTRUCTION.
