Film as a mirror of Korean history: Analysis of "new" narratives and political influences in contemporary Korean cinema

The diploma thesis deals with the interpretation of modern Korean history in Korean film production of the 21st century and its influence by the current domestic political and social situation. The analysis is focused on portraying three historically traumatic periods of Korean history - the Japanese occupation (1910-1945), the division of the Korean nation (1948-present) and the path to democratization of the country (70-80s of the 20th century). The aim of the thesis is to show how Korean films reflect given historical events and how they influence their interpretation in the 21st century. The first part of the thesis will be devoted to the definition of the relationship between history, film and politics with a specific focus on the Republic of Korea. The second part of the thesis will be focused on the three historical events already mentioned, it will introduce the reader to the historical background and elements of the controversy with an impact on the 21st century. The third part of the work focuses on the depiction of these events in Korean film production. The main goal is to illustrate new trends in the interpretation of individual events and compare them with the so-called official interpretations as presented in Korean school history textbooks.
