Violence among nobility and burghers. A portrait of duels at the turn of the 16th and 17th century

The diploma thesis deals with the topic of duels between nobles and townsmen in the early modern period. Its aim is to present the form of duels as a tool used to restore violated honour and at the same time as an important cultural phenomenon of pre-modern society. The thesis will therefore focus further on the role of honour, which represented a key element of noble and masculine identity, the loss of which had immeasurable consequences for the challenged individuals. Its violent defence was perceived as a socially legitimate but illegal act. The thesis will be concluded with an analysis and comparison of four duels that took place in the Kingdom of Bohemia between 1582-1651.
Gift-giving as Symbolic Communication in the Noble Society of Bohemia and Moravia at the Beginning of the Early Modern Age

This diploma thesis concerns itself with gifts in the noble society of fifteenth century Bohemia and Moravia. With the use of epistolary sources, the thesis tries to describe the nobles sending or receiving gifts, the items making up the gifts and the purpose of this social act. The number of uncovered letters allowed for quantitative approach; however, the sources are also analysed semantically. The thesis considers gift giving a mode of communication, used to convey information. Gift giving is theoretically approached on the basis of the works of Marcel Mauss, Pierre Bourdieu and others.
The Household of Maria Theresia of Schwarzenberg in the Middle of the 18th Century

The thesis deals with the household of Maria Theresia of Schwarzenberg, born of Liechtenstein, in the first half of the 18th century. Based on an analysis of a rich set of previously unutilised written sources - especially the written calendar from 1742 to 1744 - the author tried to reconstruct the household of the aforementioned noblewomen. The attention is paid not only to the composition of her court, but also to her religious patronage, which represented one of the highest items in the budget of every nobleman in the early modern society. Furthermore, the reconstruction of the material equipment of the household of Maria Theresia of Schwarzenberg will also be of interest, which reflected her noble and social status. The author likewise focused on the noble amusements.
Breach of marriage vows in the 16th and 17th centuries

This bachelor thesis focuses on marital conflicts in the early modern period, taking into account cases of breach of marriage vows, especially from noble or bourgeois backgrounds. It also refers to the choice of partners, courtship, the consummation of marriage and property related to marriage issues. In addition, it discusses the judiciary of the time, individual courts that dealt with similar matters, and the course of court proceedings. The main sources for this work were preserved records of disputes from the National Archives in Prague, from the Old manipulation collection from the 16th to 17th centuries. In these letters, the lawsuits and the progress of the given cases are recorded. The goal is to reconstruct these cases and get a picture of how such marital disputes are resolved.
Estate members of the Bohemian Land Diets in the years between 1606 and 1610

This master's thesis deals with the noble estate members of the Bohemian Land Diets in the years between 1606 and 1610 and develops the bachelor's thesis. The first part focuses on a brief summary of knowledge about the institutions of the diets and their role in the political system of the time preceding the Battle of White Mountain. The second chapter describes the political background of the years in which the examined diets took place. Parliamentary resolutions emerged directories of the present estate members, which are the key to the most important part of the work - specially the analysis of the composition of the present nobility at the session of the Diets. Data about the present nobles were obtained mainly using the available literature and sources. To the fundamental characteristics of those people belong the estate integration, regional pertinence, wealth, religious orientation, some cultural activities, and mutual relative marriages. The final part of the thesis contains an attempt to define the core of the parliament and compares the results of the research with the findings of the bachelor's thesis. The main goal of the work is mainly to deepen the existing knowledge about persons who defended the interests of the estates on those meetings at the beginning of the 17th century.
LEISURE ACTIVITIES ON SELECTED MONUMENT BUILDINGS ADMINISTRATED BY THE NATIONAL MONUMENT INSTITUTE, TERRITORIAL MONUMENT ADMINISTRATION IN ČESKÉ BUDĚJOVICE

The thesis recapitulates leisure-time activities on selected historic sites administered by the National Heritage Institute, Regional Historic Sites Management in České Budějovice. It describes the life in three different types of historic residences - Švihov Castle, Kladruby Monastery and Manětín Mansion, concisely summing up their history. Suggestions concerning the particular general plans for spending leisure time on the mentioned sites are contained in a separate chapter. The final specific project offers a solution to the guided sight-seeing tour of Švihov Castle.
Animals in everyday communication on the court of Henry the elder of Schwamberg

This bachelor thesis deals with the symbolic meanings of gift animals on the renaissance court of south Bohemian nobleman Henry the elder of Schwamberg. Firstly it focuses on the people involved in the communication, the house of Schwamberg, its member Henry the elder of Schwamberg and the aristocrats, who sent him animals. This provides foundation for studying the role of animals in the communication between nobles. It also tries to unveil the hierarchy of gift animals. The thesis attempts to apply historical animal studies on Czech early modern nobility.
Lords of Hradec and Slavata´s of Chlum and Košumberk in the middle of the 16th century

This diploma thesis deals with two aristocratic families in the middle of the 16th century. The thesis focuses on their connections and relationships between the two most important family representatives - Jáchym from Hradec and Diviš Slavata of Chlum and Košumberk. The first chapter describes the current research on the early modern nobility and their daily life. The second chapter deals with the lords of Hradec with emphasis on Jáchym. The next chapter deals with Slavats of Chlum and Košumberk and Diviš Slavata. The last chapter constitutes the core of given thesis. It describes the formal characters of Diviš's correspondence to his brother-in-law Jáchym and analyses the topics of his letters. Part of the diploma thesis is the edition of this correspondence.
