The diploma thesis deals with the issue of upholstered seating furniture. It is divided into theoretical and practical parts. The theoretical part explains the concepts and termi-nology related to the topic. The subject of the practical part is the elaboration of a design of seating furniture intended for interior design, including sketches and variant solutions that preceded the design. The outcome of the project is to place the product in the con-text of the room through final visualisations and the production of a functional prototy-pe in 1:1 scale. The publication is supplemented by separate appendices.

Abstract: This work deals with the proposal of a solution for an unpholstered armchair with the possibility of being taken apart for occasional sleeping. Straightened construction enables the transformation from a sit-position to a lie-position intended for occasional sleeping. The product is designed with regard of safety and technical requirements. Theoretical part includes overwiew of given problematice and research of modern folding systems and similar structural solution, which are currently available on domestic and foreign market, including evaluation according to establishes criterias. Practical part is made of own proposal of construction solution and its technical description. The proposal also includes drawing documentation, unites and economical evaluation in level of material costs. Considering the fact of serial production the work includes also a proposal of product packaging considering packing principles and expedition upholstored furniture.

The diploma thesis describes sewing machines, threads, types of seams, machine sewing needles and materials used in the production of upholstered furniture. The theoretical part is dedicated to description of current sewing machines and their history, overview of types of seams with focus on sewn with bound stitch and possibilities of their using, needles for sewing machines and overview of textiles used for covering upholstered products. The practical part of thesis is devoted to measuring the strength of sewing selected combinations of commonly used covering materials and seams and then comparing and evaluating the measured values.

The presented thesis deals with the problematic of upholstered furniture. The theoretical part deals with the distribution of upholstered furniture, including its history, commonly used materials and technologies used from those historical to contemporary ones. The thesis also describes today's production of polyurethane foams, supplemented by a production scheme. The experimental part of the work is focused on identifying practical identification of breathability of polyurethane foams, which was performed by the METEFEM, type FF-12/A machine. This machine is a part of the test equipment in the furniture laboratory at Mendel University in Brno. An integral part of this thesis is the evaluation of the findings and their contribution to practice.

The need to complement sofa a high back and head support resulted in the requirement to propose chairs for manufacturers of upholstered furniture by Vespera. The first part outlines the historical evolution of its typology sorting. Following a survey of necessary criteria, kinds of upholstery and dimensional requirements. In the second part of this knowledge are evaluated in design concept, constructional solutions and colors. Designed chair is the perfect place to rest and relax.

The presented work focuses on the development of upholstered furniture in the time of normalization. Its objective is to describe breakthrough technologies, which were used both in Czechoslovakia and in the world in this period of time. The author believes that this goal was fulfilled with respect to the scope of this thesis. The text provides the reader with an overview of the evolution of production. This could prompt the reader to contemplate the furniture from the seventies and eighties, which can still be found in many households. The thesis also points out the connection between politics and everyday live. Furnishing was indirectly influenced by the political system; due to centrally controlled economy there was lack of variability in the assortment available on the market. In the conclusion of the thesis, the author presents a concept of an upholstered chair, which is based on the DX 220 model, designed by the architect Karel Šafránek, produced by Dyha Brno cooperative since the year 1987.

The first part of this dissertation assesses the current state of upholstered seating furniture in the living rooms and points out its alternatives in the form of variable seating systems. It also considers ergonomic, safety and hygienic requirements for upholstered seating and introduces materials used in production. The conclusion of the first part is devoted to finding an inspiration in the creative process and conducting research. The second part analyses findings gained from both the theory and practical research. Based on these findings, first sketches are made. Then is selected the best option, that is in progress. Subsequently there are created the final visualizations and construction solution.
