Mariana Kubištová CZECH ARCHITECTURAL PHOTOGRAPHY IN THE 1920s TO THE 1950s Abstract The thesis Czech Architectural Photography in the 1920s to the 1950s presents the theme of architecture photography, from the 1920's to the 1950's, focusing on Czech cultural setting, observing photography meeting contemporary acts in the field of architecture, thus the photography of modern architecture. It methodologically researches the theme from a visual study viewpoint; however it applies a little more traditional approaches, which try to define architecture photography depending on functions it carries out; to demarcate its various categories, describe its history and name some of its important representatives. Each of these approaches is able to capture a different aspect of the observed theme. The first part of the thesis attempts to answer what architecture photography is, what we can qualify as architecture photography and how we can approach and interpret it. It summarizes research and knowledge of this field up till now, not just within Czech cultural setting but also abroad. Last but not least, it tries to outline historical, social and artistic context of the researched era. The second part counts with the presumption that the core and the biggest volume of visual material lies in the field of professional...
Rembrandt fecit – Liepmann gedruckt. Oil-painting in the age of mechanical printing
Trnková, Petra
On January 16, 1839, a short report appeared in the Preußische Staats-Zeitung announcing the possibility of perfect mechanical reproduction of oil paintings. The news, which soon spread to other countries through the local press, was about the invention of the Berlin painter Jacob Liepmann – the so-called Ölgemälde-Druck. The paper aims not only to recall the forgotten invention and its creator and to clarify Liepmann’s principle of mechanical reproduction of oil paintings, but also to shed light on the circumstances of its development, publication, existence and early demise. In addition, attention is paid to contemporary discussions on the topic of perfect, fast and easy reproduction of a painting and to the problem of making the works of old maters accessible to the public.

Photography and the moment. Several comments on the mechanical recording of the image and the reciprocity of light and time in the 19th century
Trnková, Petra
One of the key issues met with by professional and amateur photographers, natural scientists and ultimately even artists working with photography in the 19th century was the length of the exposure. Based on several examples from output both at home and abroad, this article describes not only the changing face of exposure time (both faster and slower) as new photographic technologies developed, but also its practical application, the transformation of its „ideal“ and not least, the associated technology.

Dr. Schuh´s Projection Microscope and the “Daguerreotype in Practice”
Trnková, Petra
The central focus of the paper is one of three daguerreotype photomicrographs that have been preserved in Central European collections. Namely the one that is to be found today in the National Technical Museum in Prague, which has traditionally been attributed to the rector of the grammar school in Litomyšl (East Bohemia), Florus Ignatz Stašek. Attention is payed both to the technical conditions under which this image may have been created and the question of who was responsible for it, with reference to the role (which cannot be overlooked) played by one of the pioneers of photography and modern microscopy in Austria, Carl Schuh.
Preservation of photographs and drawings: an inspiration for smaller collections
Cíglerová, Tereza ; Doležalová, Kateřina ; Šíblová, Markéta ; Trnková, Petra
Methodology for care and basic conservation of photographic or drawing collections administered by rather small institutions who are limited in terms of space, budget or human resources. Among the target users belong organisations such as research institutes, private collections of social interest, as well as local museums collecting a whole range of material, but missing an expert in the field of photograph/drawing collection management and conservation. The methodology gives a wide range of information – encompassing basic recommendations for collection rescue, management and conservation treatments as well as information on international standards in the field of photograph and paper conservation.
