Czechs in Portugal The work aims to map the diverse factors which shaped the perspectives of Czech travelers on Portugal in the 20th and 21th century. It focuses on the analysis and synthesis of seven travel journals from this period: Za horama pyrenejskýma by Jiří Guth-Jarkovský (1902), Kde země končí a moře začíná by Roman Vlach (1962), Jak jsem se stal Portugalcem by Alexandr Petrželka (1980), Poloostrov na konci světa by Josef Hotmar (1989), Jak jsme pili portské by Jan Šmíd (2004), Výlet do Portugalska aneb Poetický průvodce na cestu tam a zpátky by Jan Burian (2005) and Vstávám a pokračuji v cestě by František Lízna (2010). The first chapter defines the travel journal as a literary genre, its characteristics, and the changes of its functions throughout history. The second chapter is concerned with the analysis of the individual travel journals. First, the profile of the author, his motivations for the journey, and the writing of the book are analyzed, and subsequently the language, form and contents of the piece of work. The artistic and content value of the works is evaluated based on the correctness and complexity of the information presented in each of them. Jindřich Šolc and his activity at the head of the Prague municipal government

The aim of this thesis is to map the situation at the Prague City Hall between 1887 and 1893 during the governance of mayor Jindřich Šolc. The introduction deals with the development of the capital city of the Kingdom of Bohemia in the second half of the nineteenth century, and personal and public life of Jindřich Šolc. The thesis is based on materials of Prague City Archives and contemporary press reflecting actual events. It analysis the events of public interest and tries to describe the crucial problems and the greatest achievements of the local government of that time. It depicts the mayor's unusual start of his office, and on the example of two scandals it tries to show his complicated position. It monitors the implementation of particular municipal projects, shows the difficulties associated with the language issues and focuses on the relations between the Old Czechs' majority and the Young Czechs' opposition. It describes in detail the process of election battles that resulted into Jindřich Šolc leaving the local politics, followed by concluding of the town hall compromising agreement, ensuring the National Liberal Party (Young Czechs) stronger representation in the city council.
