The Sokol Identity: Past and NOw

This disertation thesis deals with the Sokol identity changes during its whole existence as Sokol was founded in 1862. In 2012 Sokol celebrated 150th anniversary by XV Sokol gymnastic festival 'Slet'. There were different opinions about that festival. That is the reason why the question about motivation of being a Sokol member in the past and now is so important. Are the same traditional Sokol values in the present? The thesis is divided into two parts - historical and contemporary - each chapter deals with a logical part of Sokol identity development. The historical part is based on a well- known historical studies that are confronted with both Sokol writers and archival resources. Besides of the general facts about the Czech Sokol Organization, the contemporary part also includes a field research focused on topics of both 'ethic' and 'emic' Sokol values. The research was prepared by using a quantitative method of questionnary survey of both Sokol members and non-Sokol public. The second part of research was prepared by using a qualitative method of directed interview with Sokol leaders. In the research participating observation at the Prague Sokol ball 'Šibřinky' was also used. The question is whether they are still popular or not. Feminism and emancipation at the threshold of the 20th century Anna Řeháková, Vlasta Pittnerová, two case studies This PhD thesis deals with feminism and women's emancipation in Prague at the threshold of the 20th century. This work is a case study, based mainly on the biographical method. It is a concrete contribution to the history of emancipation and women's issues. The aim is to contribute to understanding the development of the women's movement in the Czech region on the border of the 19th and 20th century in a particular situation. Matter of this thesis is conceived as two case studies of two little-known personalities of the women's movement, their life and work today: a teacher and writer Anna Rehakova and writer and publicist Vlasta Pittnerová. The author conducted an analysis of the archival materials, memoirs, and inhe- ritances, the sources of contemporary women's own literary press and publications of both protagonists examined, as well as specialized books on the matter. On the basis of their work author demonstrates the development process in the women's movement, views the women and their fate. All of this, based on an example of life circumstances, attitudes and beliefs, as well as the formation of these two personalities not quite typical, active and taking part in the stream of...
