The Role and extentof the U.S. engagement during the civil war in Nicaragua
Prouza, Tadeáš ; Anděl, Petr (advisor) ; Raška, Francis (referee)
This Bachelor thesis deals with activities of the United States of America that were aimed at support of anti-government insurgents during the civil war in Nicaragua (1981- 1990). The subject of my research is primarily historical development of relations between Washington and rebels that were generally called Contras. This work should help us to understand the issue in broad context. Because of that reason it aims even at conflicts between different parts of American power and at international-political events that influenced the development of the mutual relation. Also it strives to cover what influence did have the American support on form, course and result of the civil war. Washington engaged in Nicaragua in different ways. First, it was the straight involvement, mostly through the CIA. Second was through financing the rebels and third it was through the diplomatic channels. The civil war that was influenced by the bipolar separation of the world was in Washington concerned as another chapter of the cold war. Both sides of the conflict were supported by another countries, but the USA were absolutely crucial for the development and that's why it's important and interesting to explore this topic.
