Helmut Schmidt's influence on shaping of German Security Policy and its consequences for NATO's strategy in 1974 - 1982

Diploma thesis "Helmut Schmidt's influence on shaping of German Security Policy and its consequences for NATO's strategy in 1974-1982" discusses the important role of German Chancellor Helmut Schmidt in shaping of the security policy of the Federal Republic of Germany in the 1970s. The first part of the thesis focuses on the Schmidt's political career. Helmut Schmidt pointed out the exigence of the turn of the NATO' strategy through his Balance of Power Theory. Thesis examines especially the influence of German security policy of Chancellor Schmidt and it analyses the consequences of the German activity for the debate about the NATO'strategy in the second half of the 1970s. This part deals particularly with the NATO Double-Track Decision that enacted the need of NATO'armament together with the initiation of the arms control negotiation between the East and the West. The last part examines the internal situation in the Federal Republic of Germany in the context of the German security policy advocating by the Chancelor Helmut Schmidt.
