Vyšehrad: from a medieval fortification to an Early Baroque citadel
Nechvátal, Bořivoj
The area of the fortified complex used by the Bohemian princes and kings has changed substantially since the Early Middle Ages. Today it is composed of the Baroque Bastion of St Ludmila on the south side with the "Old Burgrave's House", and the bastion of St Wenceslaus on the west side. The massive Early Baroque armoury that originally stood on the north side of Vyšehrad burned down in 1927. It was built in 1654-1678, when Vyšehrad has been rebuilt to the Baroque citadel and the terrain relief has changed significantly.

Research of the Early-Medieval Basilica of St. Lawrence in Vyšehrad
Nechvátal, Bořivoj
The Basilica St. Lawrence lies on the border oj the princely and royal acropolis and the east front section of the castle. Its long-term research started in 1884 when early-medieval tiles were discovered in the baroque residence no. 14 which makes up a part of the basilica. In 1903 archaeologists led by B. Matějka disclosed foundations of a basilica with an inserted transept. The building was dated to the 11 th-12th centuries and after the end of the excavations the site was filled up. The basilica was excavated again in 1924-1926 during archaeological research of K. Guth. A concrete slab was then placed over it and the site has remained open ever since. The third phase of the research was camed out in 1968-1970 when stratigraphic positioning oJthe tiles was determined. The dating was specified to the late 11th century, to the period when Vyšehrad was the seat of the first Czech king Vratislav II (1061-1092).
