What is the Theatre
Neznal, Vít ; ETLÍK, Jaroslav (advisor) ; PŠENIČKA, Martin (referee)
Vít Neznal’s PhD thesis begins by defining theatre as a specific sphere of media. According to the author, such notion is made possible by following up to the tradition of Czech theatre theory (immediacy as a specific feature of the medium, a synthetic basis, a non-substantial conception of a work, acting as a decisive art, a total three-dimensional feedback-based communication with cardinal impact on the specific nature of stage acting, and an active position of the spectator). On this basis, Neznal proceeds to explain why there is no justifiable reason for theatre theory to abolish the dichotomy between art and reality. His premise is that while theatre is rooted in life, it is at the same time automatically and irreversibly taken out of it as a medium. As a result, there is, from the point of view of theatre theory, a difference between an intensified “life” entering the stage and becoming the basis of expression (intensification of “life” is the basis of means of expression and is therefore made intentional) and between its integration with other pillars forming the constitutive basis of a theatre act as such on the actual level of media (the artificial pervaded by “life”).

Image and word
Neznal, Vít ; ETLÍK, Jaroslav (advisor) ; CÍSAŘ, Jan (referee)
Vít Neznal's MA thesis called The Image and the Word deals with images and words as the two primary means of representation and elaborates on Neznal's bachelor thesis, in which he examined their articulation through the medium of theatre. The author first interprets the nature ? identity of image and representation with regards to general esthetic categories (mimesis, intentional object, simulacrum), and goes on to focus on their specific manifestations within individual artistic domains (painting, photography, film, theatre), basing his analysis on the framework of numerous theoretical concepts (structural-semiotic discourse, the "esthetics of the performative," the "ontological principle," etc.). The author then reflects on the word, while keeping his previous conclusions in mind, mainly within the context of theatre. His central theme is the identity of the image, or representation. This influenced his choice of examples. The analyzed works are mainly connected through an exploration of the limits of representation and through the thematization of their artistic language.
Image and Word, Especially in the Theatre
Neznal, Vít ; Etlík, Jaroslav (advisor) ; Císař, Jan (referee)
?Image and Word, Especially in the Theatre", a bachelor´s thesis, addresses the phenomenon of image and word as fundamental constitutive components of a theatre performance. At the same time, the author considers and interprets their fundamental role in the arts in general. Taking as a basis the theory of semiotic and structural studies, the author attempts a confrontation with hermeneutics. The goal of the work is to define image and word not only from the point of view of noetic theather, which aspires to expression through symbols, but mainly to point out their tendency to be realized within the framework of the ontological principal of the theatrical arts. Although image and word are going through a significant transformation process within the arts, the author tries to prove that the theater, due to its performative character, can omit neither image nor word. The author uses as a primary basis the perception of image and word in their processuality stemming from the nature of temporality in theatrical arts.
