Residents' Perceptions of Gentrification and Related Changes: a Study of Smíchov and Karlín
Columby, Nikola ; Ouředníček, Martin (advisor) ; Kubeš, Jan (referee)
Gentrification is an urban process gone global with many permutations and local specifics. This master's thesis analyses how residents are perceiving gentrification in rapidly developing, post- industrial, inner-city neighbourhoods of Prague - Smíchov and Karlín. The thesis is based on the concept of gentrification as planetary phenomenon that is anchored in a post-socialist context of contemporary Prague. The integral process of displacement is understood as direct but also symbolic, as an attachment to one's neighbourhood. Perception, an individual's filter of understanding and dealing with the world, is used to capture nuances, experiences, and feelings. Using interviews, the thesis seeks to answer the following questions using the underutilized perceptions of regular citizens. How are residents perceiving gentrification and the related changes? Where are residents placing gentrification? Are these findings the same in Smíchov and Karlín or are there differences in the perceptions? Gentrification and displacement are palpable urban processes that the respondents perceive as having changed the neighbourhoods in an impactful way. Karlín is seen as gentrified, whereas in Smíchov the situation is more nuanced. The group most clearly identified as being displaced are the Roma. The gentrifiers are...
Manor demesne. Aristocrat's relationship to the land ownership. Dukes of Saxe-Lauenburg 1600-1750
Vokurka, Michal ; Koldinská, Marie (advisor) ; Kubeš, Jiří (referee) ; Šantrůčková, Markéta (referee)
According to Manuel Schramm, the 17th century marks a turning point in the perception of nature and landscape in Western and Central Europe. This thesis attempts to trace these changes in the attitude of aristocrats towards their dominions. Based on a sample of Bohemian demesnes of the Dukes of Saxe-Lauenburg, the thesis focuses on the acquisition of estates and the development of residences, sacral (church) buildings, gardens, water infrastructure, forests and farms and their management. The thesis argues that the dominion had three basic functions for its owner (and his family): economic, aesthetic and recreational (leisure). The requirements to fulfil all three functions were often met within same area of the estate. The successful combination of these functions led to the owner of the dominion being portrayed as a good Hausvater (householder). In case of the Princesses Anna Maria Francisca and Sibylla Augusta, this was combined with the stereotype of the good widow. The dissertation follows the management and changes of the dominion according to the demands of its owner and tries to (re)construct his/her the relationship and attitude towards the dominion.

Faculty of Pharmacy in Hradec Králové, Charles University Department of pharmacognosy Candidate: Mgr. Jan Kubeš Supervisor: PharmDr. Lenka Tůmová, CSc. Title of Doctoral thesis: Transport mechanisms of secondary metabolites across membranes of plant cells An attention was focused on the metabolism of isoflavones in recent years, including their transport within plants and cultures in vitro. A research is focused on the transport mechanism identification across cell or vacuolar membrane. There are localized different transporters as or the transport of some metabolites can take place through membrane vesicules. The release of five isoflavones (genistin, genistein, biochanin A, daidzein and formononetin) into nutrient medium was observed in suspension culture of Genista tinctoria L and Trifolium pratense L. These cultures were treated with NH4VO3 solutions (1 a 10 M concentration) when isoflavon content in medium was higher after 24 hours. This increased volume of isoflavones was supressed by different transport mechanism inhibitors. The transport of isoflavones in T. pratense was influenced by ABC inhibitors from MRP subfamily, but genistein concentration in medium was lower after treatment with MDR subfamily inhibitors. Brefeldin A, which blocks vesicular transport, also decreased concentration of...
