Patricie Kubáčková Transitional experience as reflected by the first Czech immigrant generation in the USA with a special focus on language This dissertation is focused on how the members of the first generation of the Czech immigrants in the USA reflected in the autobiographical narrative interviews their life experience of emigration and their effort on adaptation in the new country where they settled down and started their new life. In the reflection of the emigration they considered not only their situation but the future of their offspring too. As a unifying topic the motive of an stranger was determined. The strangers begin their new life in the new country, however, their origin remains detectable even after long time. This social legibility of their origin is analysed in the non-native accent and on different assimilative strategies concerning the names of the immigrants. I understand the first immigrant generation as a transitional generation. I focus on how the members of this generation reflected their language dissimilarity in their narrations if they experienced it as discredited or as a stigma and under what circumstances. Manžel běžel na úřady. Calques in the speech of the first Czech immigrant generation in the USA

This article is concerned with the first Czech immigrant generation in the USA and the influence of American English on their Czech. The first generation can usually speak their mother tongue very well. However, long-term contact with American English led to changes in the Czech language. In this paper, the analysis is oriented to the calques which are usually considered (by immigrants) to be the “correct” Czech words, as opposed to, for example, loanwords.

Metaphors of contact

The metaphor is shown as a mediator involved in autobiographical interview. Metaphor as a figure of speech helps us to express our experiences and opinions. This study is based on interviews collected within a research project, called "An investigation in the Czech Society of the "Normalization" Era: Biographic Narrations of Workers and Intelligentsia." They presented contact metaphors: 1) metaphors of separation/isolation (hole, concentration camp, closed water level) and 2) metaphors of bonding/tie (root, manacle, bond).

The past, present, and future of the DIALOG corpus

The DIALOG corpus is a special corpus of spoken Czech, consisting of video recordings and transcripts of television discussions. The working form of the corpus contains more than two million words. In the introductory section of this paper, we discuss the motivation that led the researchers from the Czech Language Institute, Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic to collect and analyze dialogical speech, and we also present an overview of the publications based on work with the corpus. In the second section, we provide information about turning the collected material into an electronic linguistic corpus and about the basic characteristics of the working version of the DIALOG corpus and its first public version, known as DIALOG 0.1 (http://ujc.dialogy.cz). In the concluding section, we present the anticipated schedule for releasing the corpus for public access; we also indicate some currently relevant areas of research that can benefit from using the DIALOG corpus.
