Veselý, Petr ; Koudelka, Tomáš (referee) ; Dašek, Ondřej (advisor)
Today’s society is highly reliable on a working road infrastructure, which is because of collective efforts already built in terms of main net of roadways, and the attention is now paid to its service life primarily from a point of view of a climate change which is causing more frequent temperature extremes. This thesis sets its goal to perform basic tests for bitumen, especially ones dealing with low temperature properties, on types of bitumen usually used in out day to day world and asphalt mixtures made with those types of bitumen. The theoretical part talks about the basic definition of bitumen and studies performed on the similar issue. Practical part of the thesis is focused on performing the tests of bitumen and asphalt, which include but are not limited to, penetration test, softening point test, critical temperature detected by method by Fraasse and the bending beam rheometer and the test to set critical temperature of asphalt by using TSRST. At the end of the thesis the evaluation of results and its mutual correlation is performed.
Slurry surfacing
Koudelka, Tomáš ; Komínek, Zdeněk (referee) ; Hýzl, Petr (advisor)
This thesis is focused on microsurfacing technology. The theoretical part describes modern trends especially in the field of coloured surfaces and special system Flexiplast®. The practical part presents the results of conducted tests, particularly tests of breaking time, cohesion, determination of wearing and determination of friction after polishing. The key advantage is that it specifies which aggregates, which were taken from quarries through the Czech Republic, are convenient for this specialized technology. It was verified that RAP material suits use in microsurfacing. Furthermore, colour mixtures are viable for practical application which was confirmed by tests in the laboratory and trial lying as well. Special use of technology in the system Etanpalst and pictures which show field work are presented.
Influence of aged bituminous binder on the properties of polymer modified bitumens
Pecha, Marek ; Koudelka, Tomáš (referee) ; Varaus, Michal (advisor)
This bachelor thesis deals with problematics of polymer modified binders specially designed for production of asphalt mixtures containing Reclaimed Asphalt. These polymer modified binders are referred to in the literature as PMB RC (polymer modified bitumen for recycling). The first part of the thesis is focused on obtaining different types of PMB RC from various european producers. These binders were subsequently tested using empirical tests of asphalt binders for the classification purposes according to ČSN EN 14023. In the next part of the thesis the influence of the addition of aged asphalt binder on the properties of individual PMB RC was assessed. Mixing of binders was done to simulate the production of asphalt mixture in a mixing plant, where the binder of the Reclaimed Asphalt and the freshly added binder are mixed together. An assessment of the effect of the aged binder on PMB RC behavior was also carried out using conventional asphalt binder tests.
Recycling of asphalt mixtures - variability of RAP - parameters
Tuháček, Martin ; Koudelka, Tomáš (referee) ; Varaus, Michal (advisor)
The bachelor thesis is focused on RAP material (Reclaimed asphalt pavement), particularly on its characteristics and usage while producing hot mix asphalt at plant. The theoretical part thoroughly describes different fields of application of RAP, these include both the hot and cold recycling. The practical part, on the other hand, essentially covers the problem of using the maximum feasible amount of RAP in hot mix asphalt mixtures; mechanical and psychical properties of a binder and aggregate grading curves are evaluated. On the basis of the testing results, the classification of RAP is undertaken. Moreover, the variability of RAP characteristics is assessed and compared within two various plants. Therefore, the maximum amount of RAP added is based on the very deviation of each characteristic. Representative samples were of two sizes – 0/11 and 0/22.
Cold recycling of flexible pavements
Řehulka, Martin ; Koudelka, Tomáš (referee) ; Varaus, Michal (advisor)
The bachelor´s thesis is focused on recycling of the flexible pavements in general, namely cold recycling. This modern technology was introduced in the Czech Republic after 1989. The first half of the thesis describes theoretically various types of recycling of flexible pavements, where the greatest attention is paid to this technology. The second part describes the section of the modernization D1 motorway where this cold recycling was applied. The technological process, including visual documentation and control tests, is documented.
Use of fluxing additives to modify the properties of asphalt binders
Šefránková, Radka ; Koudelka, Tomáš (referee) ; Dašek, Ondřej (advisor)
The subject of the thesis is to describe the effect of fluxing additives on the behaviour of asphalt binders. Emphasis will be placed on changes in rheological properties of asphalt binders at intermediate temperatures, stability during aging and influence of fluxing agents on their low-temperature properties. Theoretical part will deal with the principle of asphalt binders aging and it will summarize knowledge about fluxing additives. Further, empirical and functional tests will be described in order to evaluate asphalt binders. In the practical part, all laboratory tests will be evaluated and the effects of two different fluxing additives will be compared.
Recycling of bituminous binders by using recycling agents
Koudelka, Tomáš ; Komačka,, Jozef (referee) ; Dašek, Ondřej (referee) ; Varaus, Michal (advisor)
Increasing the content of Reclaimed Asphalt in hot asphalt mixtures is one of the current issues in road construction, to which society's attention is paid. The higher content of Reclaimed Asphalt brings higher technological demands not only for the production of asphalt mixture plants, but also for the handling of materials in general. The benefit for higher demands on asphalt mixture production is the subsequent reduction of the environmental burden associated with the construction of road infrastructure caused by the mining industry and use of natural resources. The dissertation is focused on studying recycling agents which are used in the production of asphalt mixtures containing Reclaimed Asphalt. Emphasis is put on comparing the properties of recycled binders with paving bitumen and binders from Reclaimed Asphalts whereas the effect of repeated recycling is taken into account. A large part of the thesis is devoted to the design of the optimal dosage of recycling agents. Certain findings were used to draw a methodology describing the design of dosing of these agents. At the same time, the properties and behaviour of the recycling agents themselves were evaluated.
Microsurfacing
Koudelka, Tomáš ; Stehlík,, Dušan (referee) ; Hýzl, Petr (advisor)
This thesis is focused on slurry surfacing technology, particularly on microsurfacing. The theoretical part describes various issues of this technology: composition, manufacturing process, ecology, storage, making and design of the mixture. The practical part presents results of cohesion tests, wearing tests, consolidation and breaking time that has been performed on the mixture for microsurfacing. During the tests, the temperature of both bitumen emulsion and aggregate has been changed several times.
Recycling of asphalt mixtures with standard amount of RAP
Staňková, Michaela ; Koudelka, Tomáš (referee) ; Varaus, Michal (advisor)
The diploma thesis deals with the design of an asphalt mixture for an abrasive layer with a standard R-material content (20 %) without the use of other softening additives, while the properties of the aged asphalt binder in the mixture were compensated by dosing "softer binder 70/100". Asphalt mixtures type ACO 11+ are designed to meet the requirements ČSN 73 6121: 2019. The aim of the work is to verify the expected properties of the asphalt mixture performed functional and empirical tests according to the standards for asphalt mixtures of the ČSN EN 12697 series.
Influence of the temperature on the preparing of asphalt mixtures with higher amount of RAP
Škrobáček, Petr ; Koudelka, Tomáš (referee) ; Varaus, Michal (advisor)
This bachelor thesis is focused on the preparation of the reclaimed asphalt pavement for production of asphalt mixtures. In the thesis there is investigated the effect of the temperature of preparation the reclaimed asphalt pavement on the characteristic of the bitumen content. In the theoretical part there is described bitumen as such and reclaimed asphalt pavement. In the practical part there is described the preparation of the material for laboratory tests. The next step is the extraction and distillation of bitumen. These bitumens are tested according to depredescribed tests: ‘Determination of needle penetration (ČSN EN 1426)’, ‘The softening point (ČSN EN 1427)’ and ‘Dynamic shear rheometer’. In the last section of this bachelor thesis there is a comparison of the individual properties of the rendered bitumen of the asphalt mixtures of reclaimed asphalt pavement, with the aim of evaluating temperatures of preheating and degradation of the bitumen on the final characteristic of the asphalt mixtures witch higher quantity reclaimed asphalt pavement. The measured values of the temperature for preparation of reclaimed asphalt pavement shows that the temperature of the asphalt mixture before production has a significant effect on the characteristics of the bitumen, which is included in the reclaimed asphalt pavement. There is evident the difference between specimen of the asphalt mixture of reclaimed asphalt pavement and the reclaimed asphalt pavement. It is visible only from the bottom layer too.
