The Language Picture of Family in Czech Ecumenical Translation

The present thesis deals with the linguistic picture of the family in the gospels in Czech ecumenical translation of the Bible on the basis of cognitive linguistics. The theoretical part describes the difficulties of biblical translation and its changes in different editions. The main attention is then focused on literary aspects of the texts of the New and Old Testament respectively, on story and metaphor. Furthermore, the concept of family in the setting of the gospels origination and in today s society is outlined. The practical part deals with the analysis of particular extracts from the gospels. The description of the linguistic picture focuses on texts about foundation and breakdown of a family, about children, offspring and kinship. The aim of this thesis is to point out the parallels and differences of the linguistic picture of the family in the gospels and contemporary Czech.
