Political culture

In March 2007 CVVM focused on political culture in Czech Republic. According to major part of czech citizens arguments, problems and scandals are common and occur in other democracies, although major part of addressed respondents expressed their opinion that these argumentations and scandals discredit us abroad. Almost all respondents agreed that there is need to inform public about the problems, argumentations and scandals, because czech politicians need to be under control of public. Czech citizens are critical when talking about political culture of most of politically active people. More than a half of respondents evaluate political culture of members of Local Councils positively. Czech citizens are more critical when they talk about political culture of members of Chamber of Deputies.

Confidence in constitutional institutions and satisfaction with political situation in April 2008 In April 2008 within the regular survey CVVM SOÚ AV ČR, v.v.i., questioned respondents about their confidence in constitutional institutions. In this month there was a question about their trust to Chambers of Parliament, Government, President, Local and Regional Councils. As a part of the CVVM surveys there is a question about public satisfaction with current political situation in the Czech Republic. The regular survey of public confidence in constitutional institutions and satisfaction with political situation help to monitor development of public attitudes in the long term.
Party Preferences and Voting Model in April 2008

In April survey CVVM investigated how people trust to political Parties and whether they are willing to take part in elections to Chamber of Deputies. In the press release there are two different types of information : Party preference and a model of voting behaviour. Party preferences give us information about public sympathy with political Parties in the group of citizens who have voting right and there is also included a part of citizens who will not take part in elections or they do not knot who to vote for. Voting model indicate anticipated result of elections to Chamber of Deputies in the time of the survey. Voting model comes out of Party preferences but it includes only those who want to take part in elections and they answered us a Party they would vote for – in short this group does not include undecided people and non – voters.
What kinds of behavior are moral acceptable for us?

In March 2008 CVVM in its survey focused on moral acceptability of some kinds of behavior within Czech society. Czechs evaluated 24 different sorts by help of 10 points scale, where 1 meant that this behavior is never acceptable and on the other hand 10 represented “always acceptable”. The largest proportion of Czech citizens is able to accept osculation in public. On the contrary the most critical is Czech public opinion to driving under the influence of alcohol.
Czechs and toleration

In March survey CVVM focused on problems of life together of Czechs. Respondents were given a list which contained 14 different groups of people and they had to say, whether they would not want these people as neighbours. Most Czech citizens do not want to live near by drug addict (89 %), alcoholics (83 %) and persons with criminal pastness (78 %). Then we probed how Czech society is according to obtained opinions tolerant to selected groups of people. Most Czechs suppose that our society is tolerant particularly to people with different religious persuasion and young people (both 87 %). Press release also includes comparison of actual findings with results from previous surveys.

In March survey the Public Opinion Research Centre focused on topic public opinion polls. The respondents were asked if they are interested in polls results or if they have ever changed their opinion because of a poll. The survey also investigated citizens´ opinion on issues and correctness of the polls.
Public opinion on fears of imprisonment

In march 2008 CVVM posed a few questions on potential fears of imprisonment. Informants were asked to estimate how much money they would be willing to pay to avoid being imprisoned for one year due to an accident (all in a case that this would be legal). Over 70 % says that they would be willing to pay up to 100 000,- Kc or even less (approximately 4 000 Euro). Only 20 % of informants were willing to pay more than 100 000 Kc. The highest sum ever mentioned was 5 milions Kc (200 000 Euro). Another question concern on the potencial fears of being imprisoned. Informants could chose up to three main reasons. The most frequent was „separation from friends and family“ 78 % and „other prisoner‘s behavior“ 61 %. Another possibilities as „neighbourhood’s reaction on accident“, „return from prison back to normal life“, „healthy problemes“, „lost of job or career“, „prison guard‘s behavior“ and „daily prison routine“ were mentioned by 30 % or less. In the last question the informants were asked to try to guess what would be the most difficult for them of being imprisoned – again with possibility to chose up to three points. Low frequency of meeting family members and friends would be a problem for 79 %, almost the same percentage (78 %) says, that „restriction of free movement“ would be a serious distress. „Impossibility to talk to anyone who understands me“ was important for 51 %. Another variations as „neccsesity to listen to orders“, „boredom“, „impossibility to do hobbies“, „insufficient conditions for sexual life“ and „lack of entertainment“ were chosen by less than 25 % of informants
Czech Public's Attitudes to Foreigners

In March survey CVVM investigated Czech public's views with regard to foreigners who live in the long term or permanently in Czech Republic. 80 % of Czechs think that incomers should have had the right to stay here in the long term under some conditions, 9 % would support this right with no restricting conditions and only 8 % said that foreigners should not have any right to stay in the long term in Czech Republic. 42 % of citizens agree that Czech Republic should allow incomers to stay here permanently, 51 % disagree with that. 68 % think it is okay to employ foreigners in Czech Republic, 25 % claim the opposite.
