Environments of DIY Spirituality
Lebriez, Alexandra ; Kuřík, Bohuslav (advisor) ; Pixová, Michaela (referee)
Bachelor thesis project expected length : 2 pages Name of the student: Alexandra Lebriez Expected thesis title: Environments of DIY spirituality Keywords: spirituality, Czech punk scene, Subculture, DIY Thesis supervisor: Bohuslav Kuřík 0. Research Topic Alternative Spirituality(ies) in the Czech DIY Punk Subculture : Beliefs, Practices and Experiences in a non-spiritual subculture, a comparative study between the scenes of Vsetínsko and the city of Ostrava 1. Statement of the problem (what?) The Czech republic is known to be a strongly atheist country with a strong tendency toward alternative spiritualities. The aim of this study is to investigate differences in spirituality within the DIY punk subculture depending on the area, where the members live and practice or experience their spirituality. The comparison will be between the Ostrava scene (a big lowland city capital of a highly industrialized region) and the Vsetínsko region (a hilly, small town region). 2. Merit of studying the problem (why?) This study could be revelant for the field of subcultural studies, as well as spirituality studies, as it investigates spirituality in a non-spiritual and ubiquitous subculture. Its merit lies in its so far unexplored nature as no study about DIY punks' spirituality has been conducted yet, especially in...
Extractivism in the world of minecraft
Karvan, Daniel ; Kuřík, Bohuslav (advisor) ; Heřmanský, Martin (referee)
This thesis is based on virtual ethnographic research, through which it explores the environment of the video game Minecraft, focusing on its environmental aspects. In particular, monster theory, but also theories of modernity, extractivism and environmental critiques of development are used to analyse the data collected through this virtual ethnography. The focus is on how male and female players relate to the virtual environment of the game, and how this relationship is influenced by the 'real' world, and in turn, how it feeds back into it. Thus, through the aforementioned theories and concepts, the thesis explores the environmental dimensions of players' and players' interactions with the Minecraft environment. Keywords Extractivism, Minecraft, virtual, ethnography, monsters, player, environment, modernity
Waking Up from Neoliberal Totality? How We Invented a City in Which Nothing Can Be Created.
Moskvina, Yuliya ; Blokker, Paulus Albertus (advisor) ; Kuřík, Bohuslav (referee) ; Polanska, Dominica (referee)
Práce líčí příběh Autonomního sociálního centra Klinika v Praze. V práci zkoumám gramatiky veřejného sporu o městský prostor. Práce začíná úvodem do hlavních teorií používaných při studiu kolektivního jednání v městském prostoru - teorie sociálních hnutí, teorie prefigurace a přímé akce a teorie městských hnutí, primárně v SVE. Místo těchto přístupů nabízím ontologicky, epistemologicky a metodologicky aparát pragmatické sociologie kritiky a zkoumám veřejné spory o zmíněný sociální centrum. Abstract The thesis recounts the story of the Autonomous Social Center Klinika in Prague. As such, it presents an opportunity to explore the grammars of public dispute about urban space. The thesis starts with an introduction to the main theories used in studying contention-social movement studies, the theories of prefiguration and direct action, and urban movements studies. These three branches are alternated with the pragmatic sociology of critique as an ontologically, epistemologically, and methodologically novel...
Boundaries of waste: Etnography of collection yard
Vykoukalová, Anna ; Kuřík, Bohuslav (advisor) ; Abu Ghosh, Yasar (referee)
This diploma thesis examines the relationship between waste and people in the collection yard. The collection yard is used for the separate disposal of such waste, which due to its size or material cannot be stored in conventional bins. Because our society is focused on consumption and consumption, a lot of things are thrown away, but other people find them interesting or useful, so they take them out. However, nothing should be taken away from the collection yard, as the waste is not homeless, but is defined by property rights. At the same time, the main principle of waste management - the waste hierarchy states that before a thing becomes waste, it should be used differently. I therefore deal with how this concept of waste conditions the movement of things in the collection yard, how and by whom the removed waste can be used and what role the removal of waste plays in fulfilling the waste hierarchy. I decided to examine all this using anthropological methods, namely participatory observation at the collection yard and interviews with individual actors. Research has shown that things that could still serve someone are being thrown away unnecessarily at the collection yard. People decide to take them "on their own" with the unofficial cooperation of local employees. The removed waste is then used...
