A transfer towards the explicit. Homosexuality in Czech translation of Dutch-language literature and its critical response

This Master thesis aims to analyze Dutch-language literature with the topic of homosexuality in Czech translation, as well as the critical response to it. The research question of the thesis is based on the assumption that differences in the social attitudes towards homosexuality in various linguistic areas may lead to different approaches to treating the topic in the process of translation of literary works between these areas, or to differences in the critics and readers' approaches to these works, all of the above based on contrasts in the circumstances of social, scientific, cultural, political and legislative development. In the linguistic area characterized by a lower degree of social acceptability of homosexuality (i.e. the Czech-language area), an emphasis on the topic of homosexuality in literary works may be encountered as part of the critical response as opposed to the linguistic area with a higher degree of attained emancipation (i.e. the Dutch-language area). The shift in the reception of the work can be caused not only by intentional or unintentional techniques of the translator and by difference in the respective linguistic concepts, but also by extratextual strategies including the public presentation of the work.
