Quantity of trisyllabic words in the Czech speech of non-native speakers. Based on the recordings of Russian speaking respondents.

The aim of this work is to find out what problems the Russian-speaking foreigners have with the quantity of vowels in Czech trisyllabic words. The thesis consists of two parts: a theoretical and a practical one. In the theoretical part the Czech and Russian vocalic systems are described and consequently these two vocalic systems are compared. The practical part describes the research itself. First a set of recordings of Russian-language speakers was acquired who read the text compiled for research purposes. For further analysis 48 key words were selected from the text and monitored as for the realization of the quantity compared to the canonical pronunciation. Recordings of eleven Russian-speaking foreigners - women - were analysed in detail. The ascertained data were used to demonstrate trends and data on the inter- and intrapersonal variability of the examined phenomenon.
Compensation Strategies in Learning Czech as Foreign Language: Comparasion of Spoken and Written Communiques

This thesis deals with compensation strategies in learning Czech as a foreign language and concrete realisations of these strategies in spoken and written communiques. The theoretical part is based on the current linguistic-didactic approach to learning foreign languages, which includes the communicative method and the issue of communicative competence of non-native speakers. In connection with these issues, we also deal with the area of communication strategies and present the most important theoretical concepts and classifications of communication and compensation strategies by foreign researchers. We also introduce the definition of compensation strategies in Czech for foreigners within the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, which is presently a binding document for defining language competences at particular language levels. The theoretical part is followed by the empirical part which analyses concrete spoken and written productions of non-native speakers on the basis of theoretically established classification of compensation strategies designed for the purpose of research in this thesis. Pronunciation of consonantal clusters in the Czech speech of Spanish speakers

The topic of this thesis belongs to the area of L2 acquisition. It focuses on the Czech as a second/foreign language for native Spanish speakers, specifically on their pronunciation of selected consonantal clusters in comparison with the Czech orthoepic norm. The theoretical part summarizes the problems learning the pronunciation of second/foreign language and describes phonetic systems, syllable structure and specific combinatorial properties of sounds in Czech and Spanish. The practical part describes the research for which thirteen Spanish speakers from different countries and with different length of stay in the Czech Republic were recorded. For the purpose of the research a special text containing the selected consonantal clusters in initial, medial and final position of the word was compiled. Words were examined with a perceptive analysis and the results were processed according to established criteria.

Collocations of the lemma "voda" in the Czech National Corpus

The subject of this thesis is the connection of adjectives with the lemma "voda" in the Czech National Corpus. The thesis is divided into a theoretical and an analytical part. The theoretical part focuses on the definition and explanation of the basic concepts of lexicology, for example, lexeme, term, concept, multi-word lexeme, phrases, idioms, etc. In addition, the theoretical part is dedicated to collocability and collocation phrases. The analytical part includes search of adjectives connected with the noun "water" in the Czech National Corpus SYN2015, then its categorization, and an independent analysis. For clarity, I chose to categorize by frequency. It is necessary to explain the investigated collocations from the semantic side. It is also necessary to compare the obtained results with the results that appear in dictionaries of Czech language, specifically in Příruční slovníku jazyka českého (1957), Slovník spisovného jazyka českého (1989), Slovník české frazeologie a idiomatiky, výrazy neslovesné (2009), Slovník české frazeologie a idiomatiky, výrazy větné (2009) and Tezaurus jazyka českého, slovník českých slov a frází souznačných, blízkých a příbuzných (2007). In my bachelor's work I would like to talk about didactics of specific languages, meaning Czech and Korean. I would like to show development of these languages and point out their differences. From general didactics, which shows principles of these languages, I would like to get to differences between Czech and Korean languages in terms of learning. Linguistic pragmatics in Teaching of Czech as a foreign language

The focus of dissertation belongs to the field of learning Czech as a foreign language and deals with the acquisition of pragmatic competence of non-native speakers. Whereas this is a broad area, the work concentrates on speech act request. The aim is to describe how two students of Czech acquired the speech act during a one-year intensive course. The theoretical background is given in Chapter I. The term Interlanguage Pragmatics is introduced to Czech readers. The Chapter further maps what the pragmatic research of non- native speakers generally deals with and what questions it asks. Attention is paid to possible methods for collecting data for research of pragmatic competence, what kinds of errors non- native speakers usually make, what environment is suitable for the acquisition of pragmatic competence or how individual differences among students affects pragmatic competence. In the second chapter attention is paid to speech act request. We present an overview of major longitudinal studies. Standard Language with Regard to Teaching Czech as a Foreign Language

The dissertation analyses the stratification of Czech in terms of teaching Czech as a foreign language. The general theoretical part relates to teaching Czech as a foreign language or other foreign languages as close as possible. This part also includes the analysis of recordings of authentic communication between Czech speakers and foreigners. The findings of the analysis are subsequently applied to the sample plans of teaching units. The introductory part deals with the history and development of the theory of the standard Czech language and it also presents the attitudes held by the members of the Prague Linguistic Circle, which were published in Spisovná čeština a jazyková kultura (Czech Literary Language and Culture) in 1932. The theoretical part reflects the issue of defining the standard, mentions diglossia and presents a variety of contemporary opinions on future trends in the development of codification. In accordance with its aim, the paper lists the recommendations of benchmark descriptions for Czech as a foreign language and also describes so called Foreigner Talk, including the way foreigners are spoken to by the speakers of Czech. The Communicative Approach to Second Language Teaching in Current Textbooks of Czech for Foreigners Jarmila Valková Abstract The general part of the thesis reviews the background, current understanding and key principles of the Communicative Approach to second language teaching with regard to their foundation in the Direct Oral Method. The objective, usual teaching techniques and textbook components of Communicative Language Teaching are compared to the ones used in the Grammar-Translation Method to show the essential difference between the direct and indirect language approaches to language acquisition and their implications for the character of textbook components. The research part of the thesis examines selected textbooks of Czech as a second language which are supposed to epitomise the following tendencies in the area of contemporary writing of textbooks of Czech for foreigners: a) consistent use of the strategies and textbook components based on the Grammar- Translation Method, b) eclectic application of Grammar-Translation strategies and components together with certain features of the Communicative Approach, c) coherent implementation of the Communicative Approach with related techniques and textbook components. Pseudo-coordination in the syntax of contemporary Czech

The purpose of this thesis is to address the diversity of coordinative constructions, illustrating their properties, and to pro vide a forma 1 account for them in the frame of the theoretical background of the dependency syntax. This thesis namely investigates three construction types in the syntax of contemporary Czech, aH ofwhich have in common a binary coordinative structure, using the Czech coordinator a (and), where two verbs are coordinated. These constructions are referred to as prototypical coordination (ProKoor), pseudo-coordination (PseKoor) and reduplicative coordination (ReKoor). The main claim is that even though these three types share the same surface structure (go )VlandV2 or Vl andVl, they do not represent the same phenomenon of coordination and it is necessary to divide them into three types, as proposed. I have proposed a two-part analysis. Firstly, PseKoor is analysed as a complex predicate formed on the level of syntax. This analysis immediately accounts for a number of properties of PseKoor which allows the comparison with ProKoor. Secondly, PseKoor is analysed as means of aktionsart, resp. as a variety coordination over substages of events.
