Zemánek, Marek ; Horák, Tomáš (advisor) ; Löwensteinová, Miriam (referee)
Manhae Han Yong-un is known in our country for his poetry (Nimeui Chimmuk) and involvement in Korean fight for independence. The Treatise "On Reforms of Korean Buddhism (Joseon Bulgyo Yusinnon)" is one of his most important works. However, it has not been introduced to our scholar community yet. Therefore I have decided to take it as the subject of my BA thesis. The Treatise was originally written in classical Chinese, but our work is based on its Korean translation. Since is not only a list of reforms, but strongly philosophical work, our intention is to introduce Han Yong-un' s thought included in it. The Han Y ongun' s work is naturally rooted in cultural and political context, so before the actual analysis of the work we add short introduction to modern Korean history and history of Korean Buddhism. Specific problems of Buddhist philosophy, points of Chinese culture and history that may appear we will solve nd lzoc by footnotes. Of course we add a short introduction to life of Han Yong-un. The centre of our work is the analysis of the Treatise. We will follow its structure and point out the important ideas as they appear. The Treatise is divided intro 17 chapters. The most important are the chapters 1-4 that include important premises and presumptions needed for the rest of the work. So Han Yong-un...
Self-immolation in Buddhism
Gossová, Markéta ; Zemánek, Marek (advisor) ; Holba, Jiří (referee)
The subject of this thesis is self-immolation in Buddhist countries. The author shows examples from both history and the present and interprets them as a ritualised pattern passed on from the fourth century until the present time, the continuity of which was based on literary tradition as well as on historical occurrences. She demonstrates that self-immolations in Vietnam and Tibet also follow the centuries long tradition and prove to have the same components. The author intends to answer the question of the origin of the tradition in Buddhism and its broad popularity compared to other forms of self-sacrifice. Reasons for self-immolations among the Buddhists might have been manyfold: to demonstrate their loyalty to the buddhist doctrine and the Buddha, to use it as means of attaining enlightment immediately or as a form of a political protest. All of the above can be understood as a sacrifice to the Three Jewels of Buddhism, i.e. the Buddha, the Drarma and the Sangha. The author also handles self-immolation in Buddhism as a question of ethics in order to present the problem in its completeness. In doing so, she concentrates on the point of view of the followers of Buddhism themselves. The phenomenon proves to have many forms and therefore even the Buddhists are nor united in their opinions....
Korea, Vatican and History of Korean Catholic Church
Chyňavová, Anna ; Löwensteinová, Miriam (advisor) ; Zemánek, Marek (referee)
This bachelor's thesis deals with the history of Catholicism in Korea from its very beginning. It describes the background of its appearance there as well as the clash with Neo-Confucianism and following persecutions of the first believers. It defines a period before and during Japanese occupation when the Catholic Church was legal but also had to conform to demands of the government. The thesis then focuses on a period after the liberation of the nation, when the Church stopped being merely inward-looking and slowly became involved in the matters of the society. Following the Second Vatican Council it actively stood up for human rights and drew attention to dehumanizing trends of the regime's policies. The last part includes today's states of the Church, its relationship with Vatican, the tradition of Korean Martyrs and the goals of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of Korea.
