Study of production of jets and dijets in Xe+Xe and Pb+Pb collisions at the ATLAS experiment
Krivoš, Martin ; Spousta, Martin (advisor) ; Contreras Nuňo, Jesús Guillermo (referee) ; Křížek, Filip (referee)
A hot and dense medium is created during the heavy-ion collisions, affecting the strongly interacting particles forming jets. This typically leads to a suppression of jet production in heavy-ion collisions compared to jet production in proton-proton collisions. A study of this suppression in a dijet system, i.e., in a system of two back-to-back jets, can shed light on the details of the parton energy loss process responsible for this suppression. This thesis presents a measurement of dijet momentum balance in Xe+Xe collisions at √ sNN = 5.44 TeV as measured by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC. Results were compared with the previous measurement of dijet momentum balance in Pb+Pb collisions at √ sNN = 5.02 TeV. A significant momentum imbalance was observed in the most central Xe+Xe collisions, and this imbalance was decreasing with decreasing nuclear overlap. The ratio of a pair nuclear-modification factor further quantifies the differences between the dijet suppression in Xe+Xe and Pb+Pb collisions. The results are consistent with those measured in Pb+Pb data when compared in classes of the same event activity and when taking into account a difference between the center-of-mass energy of the initial parton scattering process in Xe+Xe and Pb+Pb collisions. These results provide new input for the understanding...
Study of correlations between soft and hard processes in proton-proton collisions at the LHC
Zívr, Vojtěch ; Spousta, Martin (advisor) ; Pleskot, Vojtěch (referee)
The thesis is designed to introduce the reader to the basics of particle physics. Firstly, in terms of the historical development of the knowledge of elementary particles and the interactions between them. This is followed by an introduction into the current knowledge represented by the Standard Model. Then is shown how particles are searched for and their properties verified. In particular, it is the LHC and ATLAS. Emphasis is given on the basics of using the simulation program PYTHIA and the basic commands controlling the program are explained. In addition, several simple examples of events that the reader may encounter in experiment at the LHC are shown. An event is always shown to exhibit some property or phenomenon. Specifically, these include the use of particle physics, demonstration of the four-momentum conservation law, the distinction between signal and background, light-by-light scattering, and jets and their suppression. 1
Study of charmonia production and radiation at the LHC
Váňa, Pavel ; Spousta, Martin (advisor) ; Pleskot, Vojtěch (referee)
This thesis contains a study of production and radiation of J/ψ and ψ(2S) in pp collisions. Basic analysis of J/ψ and ψ(2S) using data from pp collisions at √ s = 5.02TeV measured in 2017 by the ATLAS Experiment at the LHC is performed. The yield of J/ψ is separated into prompt and non-prompt components. A comparison between Monte Carlo generator Pythia 8.240 and data collected by the ATLAS Experiment in 2015 and 2017 at √ s = 5.02 TeV is done. Transverse momentum dependent discrepancy between data and simulation is observed. It is seen that the description of charmonia production by Pythia 8 is limited since it cannot reproduce the shape of measured cross-section. An introduction to yield extraction using RooFit from measured data is also provided. Another part of this thesis is the description of charmonium production and gluon radiation in pp collisions simulated by Pythia generator. The slow growth of the mean value of the number of gluons radiated by charmonium intermediate octet state with increasing pT is observed. 1
Jets in Heavy Ion Collisions at the ATLAS Detector
Spousta, Martin ; Dolejší, Jiří (advisor) ; Chýla, Jiří (referee) ; Bielčíková, Jana (referee)
After some introduction to the quantum chromodynamics and physics of the heavy ions collisions, and after a brief review of the ATLAS detector, the attention is focused to the main aim of the work. The main aim of the work is to develop and test algorithms suitable for the jet reconstruction in heavy ion collisions at the ATLAS detector. After the detailed description of these algorithms and their implementation to the official software of the ATLAS detector, the author analyzes their performance and provides expectation of accuracy of jet measurements in the heavy ion collisions. The rest of the work focuses on a possibility to study the influence of jets by the medium created in heavy ion collisions.
Time calibration and resolution of the hadronic Tile Calorimeter
Krejčíková, Martina ; Davídek, Tomáš (advisor) ; Spousta, Martin (referee)
The thesis deals with Tilecal hadron calorimeter, which is part of the ATLAS detector at the LHC at CERN. Main area of interest is a time calibration of the detector, which is necessary to accurately determine the energy especially of jets produced as a result of precipitation collisions of protons. Based on obtained experimental data from 2011 thoroughly explored the relationships between the time of arrival of the particles into the cells of the detector and their energies, or the distance from the given objects. By describing the time calibration, one can correct originally obtained time constants. Description and resolution of time jumps in timing of channels are part of the thesis, corrections of identified examples are included. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)
Studium potlačení jetů ve srážkách těžkých iontů na LHC pomocí detektoru ATLAS
Štefko, Pavol ; Spousta, Martin (advisor) ; Pleskot, Vojtěch (referee)
Jet production in PbPb collisions at a per-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 2.76 TeV has been studied using the ATLAS detector at the LHC. Interactions between the high- pT partons and the hot, dense medium, produced in these ultrarelativistic collisions, are expected to cause the loss of the jet energy (jet quenching). This thesis presents results of the jet analysis done on the data taken during the 2011 heavy-ion run at the LHC. Jets are reconstructed using the anti-kt jet clustering algorithm and studied as a function of collision centrality and dijet energy imbalance. With increasing centrality, dijets are observed to be increasingly asymmetric, consistent with the theory of jet quenching. The study of charged particle tracks indicates the increase of the low-pT tracks in the strongly quenched jets. 1
